Huaqiao University, also known as National Huaqiao University, is one of the only two National Overseas Chinese universities in China. Founded in 1960, its main campus is located in Quanzhou, a famous hometown of overseas Chinese in China. Founded by the state in Quanzhou in 1960, Huaqiao University is a university set up to facilitate young overseas Chinese to return to China for further study. It is under the leadership of the overseas Chinese Affairs Committee of the people's Republic of China. The first president is Liao Chengzhi, director of the overseas Chinese Affairs Committee. The length of schooling is five years (six years for the medical major of the medical department).
In 1963, overseas Chinese raised funds to build the tan Kah Kee memorial hall, which was completed in 1983. The memorial hall stands in the center of the campus and becomes the main building of the school.
In 1960, the major of Chinese language and literature in the Chinese Department of Huaqiao university enrolled students to take classes in Fujian Normal University.
In the autumn of 1961, the applied mathematics major of the Department of mathematics and the chemistry major of the Department of chemistry were added, taking advantage of Jimei overseas Chinese Tutorial school. After the school buildings were built one after another, they moved back to Quanzhou.
In 1962, the major of political education in the Department of political science, physics in the Department of physics and tropical crop cultivation in the Department of tropical crops were added.
From 1963 to 1965, the medical specialty of the medical department, the industrial and civil architecture specialty and the farmland water conservancy specialty of the civil engineering department, the inorganic engineering specialty and the basic organic synthesis specialty of the chemical engineering department, the Indonesian specialty of the foreign language department, the English specialty and the Japanese specialty were successively added.
By the autumn of 1965, together with the art department in Beijing, the school had 11 departments and 15 majors, with more than 2300 students, 480 teachers and 340 cadres and workers. By the summer of 1966, 228 students had graduated from the school for two terms.
More than 90% of the students of Huaqiao University come from 17 countries and regions such as Southeast Asia, with the majority of Indonesian overseas Chinese youth. Overseas Chinese students love their motherland, study hard, have a good foundation in foreign languages, and are active in cultural and sports activities.
In 1966, Huaqiao University has built 90000 square meters of school buildings, purchased more than 300000 books and 14000 periodicals, including more than 20000 foreign language books and periodicals. It has built dozens of laboratories and foreign language audio-visual classrooms in science, engineering, medicine and agriculture, as well as printing factories, waterworks, primary schools, kindergartens and other welfare facilities.
During the "Cultural Revolution" period, the school was closed, and at the end of 1969, it was forced to close. Most of the teachers and cadres were transferred to work, books, instruments and equipment were distributed to other units, school buildings were allocated to Fujian Medical University, and school production and furniture were completely lost.
In April 1978, the State Council approved the report of the Ministry of education and the overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and decided to resume the overseas Chinese University. At the beginning of the resumption of the University, the state required Huaqiao University to "face overseas, Hong Kong and Macao" and become an engineering university with engineering as the main subject and a combination of science and engineering. In September 1984, with the approval of the overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, Huaqiao University officially established the Department of business administration, which is the earliest department named "business administration" in Chinese Universities after the adjustment of departments.
In July 1996, the University passed the national architecture professional assessment and granted the bachelor's degree of architecture. At that time, only 14 universities in China passed the assessment. At the same time, the university has become one of the first eight tourism universities approved by the Ministry of education and one of the members of the T10 alliance of China's famous tourism universities.
In 2000, Huaqiao University became the first Chinese education base approved by the overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council.

In November 2002, the overseas Chinese office of the State Council signed an agreement with Xiamen municipal government to jointly build Xiamen campus of Huaqiao University.
On January 3, 2004, the construction of barbed wire fence on 568 mu of land in Xiamen campus was started. On November 7, the project of Xiamen campus, covering an area of 2000 mu, officially started. On January 22, 2011, the overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council signed an agreement with Xiamen municipal government to jointly build an overseas Chinese University. On February 25, the overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the Fujian provincial government signed the fourth round of agreement on jointly building an overseas Chinese University. At the end of the year, he was selected into the public postgraduate program of national construction high-level university.
On March 11, 2016, the overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the Fujian provincial government signed a new round (the fifth round) agreement on the co construction of overseas Chinese University, which included the overseas Chinese University in the construction of high-level universities in Fujian Province. In the next five years, the state overseas Chinese Affairs Office will arrange at least 800 million yuan and Fujian 400 million yuan to support the construction and development of Huaqiao University. On the same day, the overseas Chinese office of the State Council also signed agreements with Quanzhou City and Xiamen City on the co construction of overseas Chinese University. In March 2017, the Ministry of Education approved Huaqiao University to set up a clinical medicine undergraduate program. On April 21, Huaqiao University held the unveiling ceremony of the medical college. In May, the University was officially approved as a Chinese government scholarship qualified institution.
In March 2018, it was selected into the first batch of national new engineering research and practice projects of the Ministry of education; it was selected into the "double first-class" construction universities in Fujian Province (first-class university construction universities in Fujian Province).
In March 2019, Huaqiao University was approved by the Ministry of education as a pilot institution of Chinese government scholarship preparatory education. On August 19, the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of education and the people's Government of Fujian Province issued the "opinions on jointly building an overseas Chinese University" and decided to jointly build an overseas Chinese University. On November 1, the University signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Institute of industrial economy, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and the "China Industrial Economy Research Center" jointly built by the two sides was inaugurated.
