history
Bida street is named in memory of Lieut. Thomas Pedder, R. n., the first shipping master in Hong Kong.
In 1863, a bell tower on Pedder street was built at the junction of Queen's Road Central and Pedder street. The bell tower was used to tell the time and fire. It was the symbol of central at that time and was demolished in 1908. In the early days of Hong Kong's opening to the outside world, there were British Pacific in the east of Bida street and Hongkong Post general office, Jardine Pacific and Lane Crawford Pacific in the West. In 1867, the British Empire closed down, and the highest (six storey) Hong Kong Hotel in Hong Kong was built at the original site. It was burned down in 1926. Later, Hong Kong land company purchased the site and converted it into Gloucester Plaza. In the 1980s, it was converted into a land Plaza.
The location of the universal building used to be the former site of the general post office. It was demolished in 1976 for the construction of the central station of the Hong Kong Metro. The upper floor of the original site was built into the universal building. In the west of Bida street, Bida line was completed in 1924 and has been preserved to this day.
Current situation
Today's Bida street is one of the busiest streets in Hong Kong, with banks and famous brand shops on both sides. On December 8, 2005, the Hong Kong flagship store of Louis Vuitton, a fashion brand, reopened. It is one of the four largest Louis Vuitton stores in the world.
