Shenyang Xiaonan Catholic Church - it can be called Shenyang Catholic Church, also known as Shenyang Nanguan church and Nanguan Catholic Church. Shenyang holy heart Episcopal Church is located at No. 40, Nanlejiao Road, Xiaonan street, Shenhe District, Shenyang City. Originally built in 1878, the church was built by French missionary Francois farrowan. It was burned in 1900, and the existing building was rebuilt on the original site in 1912 by Bishop supelis of France, the Diocese of Southern Manchuria, using the Boxer Indemnity in the Treaty of sinchou.

Church History

In 1861, French priest Fang ruowang (1805-1878) came to Shenyang from Yingkou to preach. The construction of the church began in 1875 and was completed in 1878 (the fourth year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty), with a nursery and a school.

On July 2, 1900, in the gengzi rebellion, the church was burned down by the boxers, and more than 100 men and women, including a foreign priest, were burned to death.

The church was rebuilt with Boxer Indemnity in 1909 and completed in 1912. French design by Henry Leung. The church faces south. The twin towers are 40 meters high and 54 meters deep. They are built with blue bricks. The central part of the front is the big rose window. This is a pure Gothic cathedral.

Before 1949, the Cathedral of the sacred heart of Jesus in Nanguan was the highest building in Shenyang. In February 1985, the municipal government announced it as a municipal cultural relics protection unit. In 1988, it was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Liaoning Province. In 2013, the building was announced as the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units by the State Council

Introduction to the church

The church is located in the east courtyard, facing south from north, 66 meters long from north to south, 17 meters wide from east to west, and 40 meters high. The brick concrete structure has a plain surface of green brick, two square conical spires protruding from the top of the front, side by side with the East and the west, and the upper part is decorated with a "cross" frame. With a construction area of more than 1100 square meters and 120 couplets, it is one of the largest in China. The overall architectural pattern follows the architectural form of the European Renaissance, which is a typical Gothic architecture. There is a four story building on the west side of the church, covering an area of more than 10000 square meters, with a construction area of more than 2700 square meters and nearly 100 houses. This is the Bishop's mansion built in 1926. The overall building of the church is surrounded by a green brick courtyard wall 80 meters long from east to west and 112 meters wide from north to south. The house covers an area of 3213 square meters, with a total area of 9264 square meters.
