brief introduction
At present, there is only one battery park in Niushan in Guangzhou with the theme of battery ruins. It is reported that the park will be further improved and built within this year to eventually build a memorial park and a patriotic education base.
Structural features
When you come to Niushan Battery Park, you can see that the entrance has been initially built into an open square, with a nearly 300 meter long walk up the mountain. A large area of green space has been newly planted in the park, and the park gate and east gate have been decorated. The hillside is full of green shade, and the ridge overlooks the Pearl River. It is one of the eight famous sceneries in Yangcheng, Huangpu Yunqiang. The left, middle and right turrets at the foot of the mountain are fan-shaped and gray sand reinforced concrete. The diameter of the middle turret is 10 meters, and 21 bullet holes are arranged on the wall, which are designed according to the shape of the shells. The four turrets on the ridge are arranged in a straight line, facing south and southwest in turn, which is very powerful. Standing on the top of the mountain, you can also see the great ships on the Pearl River from afar. They are majestic and poised.
According to the relevant departments, it has been planned to expand the fort site into a park for a long time. At present, the first phase of the project has been completed, and more work will be carried out within this year. The landscape design of battery not only reflects the nature of Memorial and rest of the park, but also takes the ecological park as the direction. In function, it will be divided into three parts: Battery view area, office management area and leisure activity area. In the southwest position, a group of stacked stones will be set up for visitors to climb up and overlook the Pearl River.
According to the evaluation of relevant experts, the battery park with such a distinctive commemorative theme not only represents the glorious modern history of China for the general public, but also reproduces the natural and cultural landscape of Guangzhou in Huangpu, the starting point of the ancient maritime Silk Road.
Heavy history
According to historical records, Niushan mountain, also known as Hongshan mountain, has a dangerous terrain and has always been a must for military strategists. Before the outbreak of the Opium War, Lin Zexu had realized the important strategic value of the local area. He repaired the fort and other fortifications to guard the passage of Shiziyang into Guangzhou. In 1841, the British army invaded Guangzhou from the river. Xiang Fu, the Hunan general, led the troops to Niushan to fight in a hurry, and most of them died. After the war, Zhang Zhidong invited the imperial court to build the military ancestral hall in Xiangzhen and the tomb of the upright officers and soldiers in Wuyong. To Guangxu (1885) Niushan and other Fort groups rebuilt, mainly using German Krupp guns, magnificent. During the Anti Japanese War, the Japanese army captured Guangzhou. The Japanese gendarmes stationed in Huangpu used a trench in Niushan Fort as the execution ground for killing the Chinese people. Thousands of compatriots were killed, and their bones filled the trench. The masses called it "mass grave".
