The legend of shijingqiao
In the past, there was no bridge connecting the East and west sides of the Shijing River. Wooden boats were used to cross the river to the other side. Because people had to go through mud flats when they got on the boat and ashore, they would always make their feet and trousers dirty. In the Qing Dynasty, there was a stone maker named Zhou Hesheng in Shimen. He was very kind-hearted and thought that if only a bridge could be built on the Shijing River to facilitate people. At that time, Zhou Hesheng helped people across the river.
Once, he saw an old man with a head like three winter snow and a beard like nine autumn frost, walking tremblingly in yellow cloth, hemp shoes and crutches. Seeing this, Zhou Hesheng said to the old man, "I'll carry you across the river." After Zhou Hesheng sent the old man across the river, the old man raised his bare foot and said to him, "I lost my shoes. Help me find them." Zhou Hesheng went to the mire and found the shoes back. But the old man said, "help me put it on!" After Zhou Bang put on his shoes, he ran very fast. Zhou Hesheng thought that the old man was not an ordinary person, so he rushed to catch up with him. After catching up, he told him what he thought. The old man said that if he thought so much about the villagers, he would succeed. Then he disappeared. That night, Zhou Hesheng had a dream about the old man. In his dream, the old man taught him how to use what materials and what specifications to build the bridge. Finally, Zhou asked the old man his name. The old man said, "I'm Huang Shi Gong." Soon, the residents of Shijing town raised the cost of building the bridge according to their ability. Zhou himself was the supervisor and finally built the Shijing bridge. In order to commemorate the contributions of Zhou Hesheng and Huang Shigong, a pair of couplets carved in stone is engraved on the west side of the bridge: "Haojin immortal shoes; can pass through Si carriage"; on the east side is "Huangshi on the other side, white rainbow on the cross river".
