Guangzhou Library
Guangzhou library is located in Zhujiang East Road, Guangzhou city. It is the cultural window of Guangzhou. In 2018, it was rated as the national first-class library by the Ministry of culture and tourism of the people's Republic of China. In 2016, the people's Government of Guangdong Province announced that the library is the key protection unit of ancient books in Guangdong Province.
The predecessor of Guangzhou library is Zhongshan Library, which was built in October 1933. In 1938, Guangzhou was occupied and the library was closed. In 1949, it was renamed Zhongshan Library. After the liberation of Guangzhou, it was called Zhongshan Library. In February 2006, the new library of Guangzhou was officially founded. In June 2013, the new library of Guangzhou was fully opened.
According to the information on the library's official website in November 2018, Guangzhou Library covers an area of 21000 square meters, with a total construction area of 98000 square meters, 4000 reading seats, 14 departments, 295 staff, and 8.433 million volumes of literature.
Historical evolution
In 1927, the mayor of Guangzhou, Lin Yunxin, proposed to hold a Municipal Zhongshan Library in memory of Sun Yat Sen and promote cultural undertakings. It is decided by the municipal executive council to plan and organize.
In 1928, the Preparatory Committee of Guangzhou Zhongshan Library was established, with 16 members including Lin Yunxin and Du Dingyou.
In 1929, the Municipal Zhongshan Library broke ground in the former Guangfu Academy on Wende road.
In October 1933, the Municipal Zhongshan Library was completed and opened. Wu Zhimei was the first librarian.
In 1934, the provincial library was withdrawn, and its collection of 33500 books was received by the municipal library.
In 1938, Guangzhou was occupied by the Japanese, and Zhongshan Library was closed.
In 1945, after the victory of the Anti Japanese War, Du Dingyou also served as the director of the preparatory office for the restoration of Zhongshan Library.
In 1949, it was renamed Guangzhou Zhongshan Library. After the liberation of Guangzhou, it was called Guangzhou Zhongshan Library.
In 1955, the provincial and municipal libraries were merged into Zhongshan Library of Guangdong Province. The original site of Guangzhou Zhongshan Library was changed to the North Library of Guangdong Zhongshan Library, which is called Sun Yat Sen Literature Library.
In December 1980, the office meeting of Guangzhou municipal Party committee decided to prepare for the construction of Guangzhou library.
In January 1981, the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of culture announced the establishment of the preparatory group of Guangzhou Library and the decision to change the "spark ignited Museum" to the site of Guangzhou library.
The opening ceremony of Guangzhou library was held on January 2, 1982.
In October 2004, Guangzhou Development Planning Committee officially approved the new library construction project of Guangzhou library.
On February 20, 2006, the foundation of the new Guangzhou library was officially laid.
On December 28, 2012, the new Guangzhou library was officially opened.
On June 23, 2013, the new Guangzhou library was fully opened.
