Deng Shichang memorial hall is located in the ancestral hall of Deng family in Haizhu District, Guangzhou city. Deng Shichang memorial hall was established on September 17, 1994 with the approval of the Central Propaganda Department. It is a cultural relic protection unit at the municipal level in Guangzhou, and also a patriotic education base in Haizhu District of Guangzhou. The memorial hall is located in Deng's ancestral hall on Baogang Avenue, Haizhu District, where Deng Shichang, a national hero, was born.
The ancestral hall was built by the Qing government after Deng Shichang died in 1894. The whole ancestral hall has a typical Lingnan architectural style. It is one of the few well protected buildings in Guangzhou. The pingpo tree and ancient well sites planted by Deng Shichang still exist. Since its establishment, the museum has organized more than 20 exhibitions and carried out a number of patriotic education activities. So far, it has received nearly 230000 domestic and foreign visitors, making the museum one of the one-day tourist attractions in Guangzhou.

Life of the characters
Deng Shichang, a national hero, was born in 1849 in a tea merchant's family in longdaowei Township, Panyu county (now Longfeng street, Haizhu District). In 1840, Britain launched the Opium War to invade China. With the Western powers invading China one after another, the Qing government was forced to sign a series of unequal treaties to humiliate the country. In his youth, Deng Shichang was influenced by the national disaster and the people's resistance, which made him aspire to serve the country.
The Qing government carried out westernization movement. At the age of 18, Deng Shichang resolutely devoted himself to the army. In 1867, he was admitted to Fuzhou shipping school to learn navigation knowledge. He was diligent and studious, and graduated with excellent results in 1871. He served in the navy of the Qing Dynasty and successively served as the ship management belt of Jianwei, haidongyun, Zhenwei, Zhennan, Yangwei, Zhiyuan, etc. he successively participated in the wars in Taiwan, Korea, Fujian and other places. He was twice appointed by the Qing government to Britain to receive the warships ordered by the Qing government.
In 1887, after the formation of the Beiyang Navy, Deng Shichang served as the commander of the Navy. After the Meiji Restoration, Japan's national strength began to grow and planned to invade China. In 1894, Japan first invaded Korea, and Sino Japanese war broke out. On September 16 of the same year, Deng Shichang commanded the Zhiyuan warship to reinforce North Korea with the Beiyang Navy. On the way home the next day, he encountered the Japanese fleet in the Yellow Sea, and the two sides launched a fierce battle.
Deng Shichang, fearless in the face of danger, bravely killed the enemy. At the end of his ammunition, in order to change the situation of the battlefield, he resolutely drove his ship to collide with the main Japanese warship "Yoshino", and was unfortunately shot and sank. Deng Shichang was not an only child. He was drowned in the Yellow Sea. When he died, he was only 46 years old. In recognition of Deng Shichang's loyalty to his country, the Qing government paid him a preferential pension and built a memorial temple in Weihai, Shandong Province. Emperor Guangxu sacrificed his life for his country. According to the standard of the governor, he gave Yu a pension, pursued the prince Shaobao, gave him a funeral, and took the post of commander of the cavalry. He was named Zhuang Jie, and was worshipped in Zhaozhong Temple of the capital.

Deng's ancestral hall was built in 1834. After Deng Shichang died bravely in the Sino Japanese naval battle of 1894-1895, his people expanded it to the present scale with the Qing court's Fu silver. It was built in 1994. After comprehensive repair, it has a new look and a reappearance of its former style. Deng's ancestral hall has been listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Guangzhou. In the autumn of 1949, Shichang primary school was founded in the ancestral hall of the Deng clan. Later, it was changed into a maternity home.
Since 1957, Deng's ancestral hall has been used by Guangzhou No.2 tuberculosis control institute. During the "Cultural Revolution", many cultural relics in the temple were lost, ancillary buildings were damaged to varying degrees, and part of the ancillary land was occupied illegally.
In December 1989, Deng's ancestral hall was designated as a municipal cultural relics protection unit.
In August 1994, Deng Shichang memorial hall was built in the ancestral hall. The whole building is restored to the style of the Qing Dynasty, and the wood carvings of the ancestral hall are carefully restored and painted to reproduce the original appearance of Deng's ancestral hall. The exhibition line is 80 meters long. Through nearly 600 pictures and photocopies, sculptures, models, text descriptions, etc., it reflects Deng Shichang's youth, the Sino Japanese War of 1894 and its postwar influence, making it a place for patriotic education.
