Historical evolution
The thousand Buddha iron tower was built in 965 A.D. in the eighth year of Dabao in the Southern Han Dynasty. In that year, it was located in Xiuhui temple in the city. In the Qing Dynasty, state officials moved it to Qizhou Temple (these two ancient temples have long been lost). The thousand Buddha tower has seven floors, 4.2 meters high and 1.6 meters wide at the bottom. It is square and has Thousand Buddhas cast on its body, so it is called thousand Buddha tower.
The thousand Buddha tower was damaged for a long time. Huang Zunxian, a patriotic poet of the city in the late Qing Dynasty, collected the fragments of the tower and collected them in renjinglu. He wrote the song of the thousand Buddha tower to record its affairs. Since 1935, Peng Jingyi, head of Meixian County, and Mr. Huang renhuan have moved the tower to Dongshan mountain and built octagonal pavilion for protection. Due to the changes of the times, the iron tower is surrounded in the iron and steel plant, which is polluted and damaged day by day. As a result, it is inconvenient for visitors to see, and public opinion has called for protection.
In the winter of 1989, at the invitation of Meizhou Buddhist Association, master Minghui returned to his hometown from Yunmen temple in Shaoguan. At that time, master Yuanzhao initiated the construction of Putong pagoda to help promote Buddhism and expand the Taoist temple.
In the Spring Festival of 1990, initiated by master Minghui and supported by many reasons, a nine story granite pagoda was built on the lotus hill behind Putong pagoda to protect cultural relics. The local Meizhou Municipal People's government and social leaders responded to this charity, and immediately got the approval of the cultural relics department of Guangdong Province, which "agreed to move and build with self financing".
In July of the same year, the Preparatory Committee for Meizhou thousand Buddha pagoda was established by the relevant leaders at all levels of the city, county and district, including Buddhist great virtue, Buddhist monk Foyuan, master yuanche and Dharma protector Shanxin at home and abroad. Master Minghui was in charge of the Preparatory Committee. He actively raised funds and traveled all over the world. He received warm support from overseas Chinese and local sages from Hong Kong and Macao.
On December 3, 1991, the foundation of the thousand Buddha pagoda was officially laid. On February 6, 1993, the main tower project was capped, the Qianfo iron tower was recast, moved to the bottom of the stone tower for protection, and continued to build a three-story tower
.
In January 1994, the thousand Buddha tower was moved to the first floor of the stone tower and became the tower in the tower. In June 1989, the Qianfo tower was announced by the people's Government of Guangdong Province as the third batch of cultural relics protection units in Guangdong Province.
