Hengsheng stone archway

Hengsheng stone archway and miaogouhou stone archway are the earliest existing stone archways in China, which were announced as the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units by the State Council in June 2001.

Hengsheng stone archway is located in Xianren mountain, Hengsheng village, five towns of Yin county. The memorial archway, which stands on the hillside, is made of local "yi'ao stone". The memorial archway has been destroyed, so the owner of the tomb can't verify it. It has two pillars and one room, and a stone square with imitation wood structure on the first floor. Sitting east to west, it is magnificent and exquisite. According to the research of experts, the stone archways in China were born out of wooden archways. Hengsheng stone archway and miaogouhou stone archway are imitations of wooden structure in terms of structure and details. They are very different from the stone archways built in Ming and Qing Dynasties, but they are basically consistent with the Song Dynasty's "Jianzao FA Shi". Obviously, they are in the transition period from wooden archway to stone archway. Therefore, it is confirmed that the two archways were built from Southern Song Dynasty to Yuan Dynasty. Their discovery provides valuable examples for the study of stone archway culture before Ming Dynasty, which has high historical and artistic value. It is worth mentioning that Hengsheng stone archway was discovered in the third cultural relics survey of Ningbo in the summer of 1999, which created a miracle.
