Historical story
It is said that lingdu temple was built in the Tang Dynasty, but it is also said that it was built during the northern and Southern Dynasties. According to the records of Guangdong Archaeology - Shi Lao Pian and Bao'an county annals - a brief introduction to the characters, from 424 to 430 A.D. in the early years of Yuanjia in the northern and Southern Dynasties, the Buddhist master of Beidu crossed the sea with a cup, and then went to Beidu mountain in Xitun gate to create lingdu temple. The original site is a little higher than the present temple. It was repaired and rebuilt many times in song and Ming Dynasties. According to the information, when the temple was rebuilt in 1840 in the 20th year of Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty, it was slightly moved down to its present position. The appearance of the temple now seen is the shape of the temple after it was built by the villagers of Xiacun Township in 1970. At that time, Master Sheng Yi was invited to offer incense, and Mr. Lu dingtang, director of New Territories civil affairs, cut the ribbon. There is a small Peng Ying plaque inscribed by song Xiang, a gifted scholar of the Qing Dynasty. From then on, the Dao inscribed by Liang Yaoshu entered the horizontal plaque and the couplet written by Chen Li. In addition, there is an anecdotal tablet about his father, Chong Rong Gong, which was set up by Deng Huilin in Xia Village in 1904. It records that his father, Deng chongrong, was seriously ill when he was 33 years old. Deng Huilin's grandmother and uncle went to lingdu temple every day to pray devoutly. Later, Deng chongrong recovered from his illness. They thought it was the manifestation of Bodhisattva, so they set up a stele to record it. The temple is a holy land for Buddhist pilgrimage in Hong Kong and Kowloon.
Located in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long, the three major ancient temples in Hong Kong, namely, puido temple, lingdu temple and Lingyun temple, are the root of the development of Buddhism in Hong Kong. The origin of Beidu temple and lingdu temple can be traced back to the Beidu Zen master in Liu and Song dynasties. According to the records of the biography of eminent monks, the Zen master Beidu had miraculous powers. People at that time did not know his name, but because he often crossed the river in a big wooden cup without a fake wind table, he was as light as a fly, so he was called the Zen master Beidu. It is said that the master of bodhu came to Hong Kong. To commemorate his visit, there was the appearance of bodhu temple, which has become the first Buddhist temple in Hong Kong. 3. It is now the Castle Peak monastery. In addition, it is said that lingdu temple was originally a small thatched awning, and its establishment was also related to master Badu.
After the Second World War, religious activities revived slowly, and the Buddhist community in Hong Kong began to take part in social philanthropy. For example, Daguang school was founded after the war, and the Hong Kong Buddhist Association was also founded in 1945. With the political turmoil in China and the financial and monetary crisis, a large number of refugees, including monks from all over the world, have poured into Hong Kong again. At that time, there were more monks and less monks in temples and monasteries in Hong Kong, and some monks even went begging on the streets. Later, as master Maofeng of dongputuo Temple received many monks, many monks were settled. In the eighties and nineties, Buddhism in Hong Kong had a bright future. Due to the popularity of western culture and values in Hong Kong, Eastern culture and religion are relatively regarded as backward and superstitious. From the perspective of Buddhism in Hong Kong, there were not enough monks to promote Buddhism at that time. In addition, monks who practice Buddhism in the mountains and live a simple life of farming and Zen are regarded as passive and secluded by the public, while monks who do Buddhist things to pass away the dead are regarded as ominous. As a result, there is a problem of image in Buddhism. In addition, the circulation of Scriptures was not wide, so that the development of Buddhism in Hong Kong was greatly restricted at that time. But in this era, the babies born after the second world war have grown up. Because of their generally improved education level and broad vision, monotheism can no longer meet the needs of some people, and then a trend of intellectuals studying Buddhism has sprung up in Colleges and universities. At that time, the Buddhist courses of Nengren academy and Xinya Academy had a considerable development, and the Buddhist works of Luo Shixian, Tang Junyi and Mou Zongsan were published one after another.
