Historical evolution
In 2004, Nantong University was formed by merging the former Nantong Medical College, Nantong Institute of technology and Nantong Normal University. The former Nantong Medical College and Nantong Institute of technology were established in 1912 by Mr. Zhang Jian, a famous industrialist and educator.
Nantong Medical College
Nantong Medical College, formerly known as the private Nantong Medical College, was founded in March 1912 by Zhang Jian, the number one scholar in the late Qing Dynasty, and his brother Zhang Chen. It is one of the earliest medical colleges in China.
In 1927, Nantong Medical College became a private Nantong Medical University.
In 1928, the agricultural, textile and medical universities of Nantong merged into the private Nantong University, and then became the Medical University of Nantong.
In November 1930, the private Nantong University was changed into Nantong college.
In the second half of 1937, the Japanese imperialists expanded the war of aggression, and Nantong University was forced to suspend classes.
In August 1938, Nantong University moved to Shanghai, and the courses of agriculture and textile were resumed. Medical science and Jiangsu Provincial College of medical administration were merged into national Jiangsu medical college.
In 1946, the headquarters of Nantong University moved back to Nantong and recovered medical treatment.
In 1952, Nantong Medical College was transformed into a public medical college, named Subei medical college.
In 1956, it was renamed Nantong Medical College.
In 1957, Nantong Medical College moved to Suzhou and changed its name to Suzhou Medical College (now the medical department of Suzhou University). At the same time, Nantong Branch of Suzhou Medical College was established in Nantong.
In 1958, Nantong Branch was changed to Nantong Medical College.
In 1958, Nantong Medical College was administered by Jiangsu Province.
In September 1978, the subordinate relationship was changed to a system led by the Ministry of communications and Jiangsu Province.
Since February 2000, Nantong Medical College has been transferred from the Ministry of communications to the people's Government of Jiangsu Province. The management system of the central and local governments has been implemented.
Nantong Institute of Technology
Nantong Institute of technology, formerly known as Nantong textile dyeing Institute, was founded in April 1912.
In September 1913, it was renamed Nantong Private Textile College, the first textile college in China.
In 1927, it became Nantong Textile University.
In 1928, it merged with medicine and agriculture to form a private Nantong University.
In 1930, he was the textile department of Nantong University.
In 1952, the textile department of Nantong University moved to Shanghai and merged into East China Textile Institute (later changed to China Textile University, now Donghua University).
In December 1977, with the approval of the provincial people's government, Nantong Branch of Nanjing Institute of technology was established.
In January 1979, it was renamed Nantong Polytechnic College with the approval of the State Council.
In July 1980, with the approval of the Ministry of education, the provincial government changed its name to Nantong Textile College.
In January 1985, the provincial people's government was upgraded to Nantong Textile Institute with the approval of the State Council.
In September 1995, with the approval of the State Education Commission, it was renamed Nantong Institute of technology.
Nantong Normal College
Nantong Normal University is an undergraduate college established by the former Nantong normal college and Nantong Institute of education in March 1999 with the approval of the Ministry of education of the people's Republic of China.
Nantong Teachers College was founded in 1958 and closed down in 1962.
In December 1976, with the approval of the provincial government, the school was resumed under the name of "Nantong Branch of Yangzhou Normal University". In February 1979, with the approval of the State Council, the name of Nantong Teachers College was restored.
The predecessor of Nantong Institute of education is Nantong Teachers' Training College and Nantong Teachers' training college. Nantong Teachers' training college was established in 1959 with the approval of the Provincial Department of education, and was closed in 1963.
In March 1982, with the approval of the provincial government, Nantong Teachers' Training College and Nantong Teachers' training college were established.
In March 1983, Nantong municipal Party committee decided to merge the two academies to establish a new Nantong Teachers' training college. In July of the same year, with the approval of the provincial government, Nantong Teachers' training college was named Nantong education college.
Nantong University
On May 18, 2004, with the approval of the Ministry of education, Nantong Medical College, Nantong Institute of technology and Nantong Normal University merged to form Nantong University.
In 2009, it was approved as the construction unit of doctoral degree award project.
In May 2013, it was selected into the first batch of Pilot Universities for the reform of training mode of clinical medicine master degree.

Discipline construction
According to the official website of the University in January 2016, the university has 99 undergraduate majors, 3 first-class discipline doctoral degree authorization points, more than 20 second-class discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 17 first-class discipline master's degree authorization points and 105 second-class discipline master's degree authorization points. It has one National Key Discipline Cultivation and construction site, six first-class key disciplines in Jiangsu Province, three first-class key disciplines in Jiangsu Province, five provincial excellent discipline echelons, and two first phase projects of superior discipline construction project in Jiangsu Province.
On February 22, 2019, the Chinese society of Higher Education released the 2018 national university discipline competition ranking. Nantong University ranked 88th among the top 100 universities (undergraduate) in the 2018 national university competition.
