brief introduction
Bird garden was constructed by the Land Development Corporation (now the urban renewal authority of Hong Kong) at a cost of HK $29 million. The construction started in March 1996 and was completed and opened on December 13, 1997. Bird garden is located in a suitable location with beautiful design. It is also a place for selling birds, cages, bird feed and other stalls. It is very popular with bird lovers. It is also a good place for citizens and tourists.
The construction of bird garden was mainly in line with the "Argyle Street / Shanghai Street Redevelopment Plan" of the Land Development Corporation at that time,
The redevelopment project of Yuen Po Street bird garden aims to improve the environment of the area. After the site is demolished, a comprehensive development area "langhau square" will be built. Kangle street, commonly known as "quezai Street", is located within the redevelopment area. It is famous for selling birds and pets, attracting a large number of local bird lovers and tourists. In order to retain the characteristics and style of "quezai Street", this bird garden was built in Yuanpu street. In addition to recreational facilities, there are 70 bird stalls in the garden for hawkers to continue to operate.

avian influenza
In 2004, to prevent avian influenza from invading Hong Kong, an inter departmental meeting of the government reviewed measures to enhance public health protection in quezai street. Implement the following measures:
In addition to daily routine cleaning and special cleaning operations twice a week, increase the number of daily cleaning operations;
Bird garden in Yuanpu Street will increase the number of inspections of shops in quezai street;
Requiring shop employees to wear gloves when handling bird droppings is one of the licensing conditions; and
The government launched a joint clean-up operation in quezai Street on 3 February 2004.
In June 2007, the agriculture, fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) found that the faeces of the northern starling (Daurian starling) sold on consignment in one of the shops in queniao street were positive for H5N1 avian influenza, but the disease has not yet occurred. AFCD then sent staff to the shop to take away the northern starling and more than 300 other birds, which were transferred to the New Territories North Animal Management Centre for further testing. AFCD will close the bird garden for disinfection from June 17 and clean it together with LCSD. The food and Environmental Hygiene Department will also step up the cleaning of the nearby streets. The bird garden will not be reopened until the situation is satisfactory. The park will be reopened on July 5.
