Introduction to Guandi Temple
Lhasa not only has mosque, but also Guandi temple
This shows the diversity of nationalities and religions in Lhasa.
In 1793, Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty sent General fukang'an to defeat the Gurkha invaders, and the troops returned to Lhasa. They believed that it must be Guan Yu, a martial saint, who helped them defeat the Gurkha people in the dangerous geographical environment and natural climate. So the officers and soldiers donated 7000 liang of silver to general fukang'an and his colleagues The chief executive, Dasha Hutuktu, built a new Guandi temple on the west side of Potala Palace (also known as Mopan Mountain). Because the image of Guandi is very similar to the ancient hero Gesar in Tibetan epic, Lhasa calls it "gesalakang", that is, Gesar God Temple.
For 200 years, this temple site has been believed by Lhasa people. Many pilgrims draw lots in front of the statue of Guandi to divine good or bad luck and make decisions. People also bring hens to Guandi temple to release them. Around the temple, chickens often compete for food.
