The May 4th Square, named after the May 4th movement, is one of the symbols of Qingdao. Compared with the music square, there are more tourists here. The sculpture in the middle of the square is called "the wind of May", which shows the solemn, solid and vigorous patriotic feelings.
With the "wind of May" as the center, it extends westward to the romantic European music square, and eastward to the Olympic Sailing arena. With similar waterfront scenery and different landscape styles, compared with the coastline of Huiquan Bay and Zhanqiao scenic area, the scenery here is more fashionable, and Qingdao here is more modern. Around the square is the CBD with the highest land price in the city. Leaning on the railings by the sea, looking back at the modern landscape created by the modern economy, you will feel the unique heroism and warmth of Qingdao.

historical background
The May 4th Square was named after the May 4th movement. As we all know, the great anti imperialist and patriotic movement, the May 4th movement, broke out in 1919. The fuse was the issue of Qingdao's sovereignty. Since the German occupation of Qingdao in 1897, the Chinese people have been working hard to recover the sovereignty of Qingdao. In 1914, after Japan occupied Qingdao instead of Germany, it aroused strong opposition from the people of the whole country. In November 1918, the first World War ended. In January 1919, at the "peace conference" in Paris, France, China, as a victorious country, attended the conference and put forward such legitimate demands as recovering Qingdao's sovereignty. However, it was rejected by Britain, France, the United States and Japan, and forced to transfer Qingdao's sovereignty to Japan. The news shocked the whole country. Beijing students held a demonstration on May 4, strongly demanding that they refuse to sign the contract, shouting slogans such as "fight to the death for the sovereignty of Qingdao", "return Shandong, return Qingdao". The patriotic behavior of the students was supported by the people of the whole country. In the voice of national opposition, the Chinese Beiyang government was forced to refuse to sign at the Paris peace conference, smashing the Japanese plot to occupy Qingdao permanently. Under the heroic struggle of the Chinese people, Qingdao finally regained its sovereignty on December 12, 1922. In view of the special relationship between Qingdao and the May 4th movement, Qingdao municipal Party committee and government decided to name the new square "May 4th Square".

It's a square flat ground. At first glance, it's just an ordinary stone square. In fact, there are nine vertical and horizontal rows of 81 underground fountains, which can be sprayed according to different shapes and heights. It's one of the favorite sightseeing projects for tourists, especially children.
Looking south from the fountain square, a tall and majestic torch shaped red sculpture stands on the semicircular square at the south end of the May 4th Square, which is the landmark sculpture "may wind" of Qingdao city. The sculpture highlights the historical background of Qingdao as the fuse of the May 4th Movement and fully reflects Qingdao's recollection of the rise and fall of history and national honor and disgrace. The sculpture is surrounded by open green space, with lawns, shrubs and trees forming a forest belt. It can be said that flowers bloom in three seasons and are evergreen in four seasons. 100m fountain

Because the sea water is directly extracted from the sea, a distance of 160 meters from the shore is selected in the design, mainly to prevent the water mist of the fountain from corroding and salinizing the facilities and lawns on the shore.

The construction conditions are unique. When it was examined and approved by the International Olympic Committee, this venue was the first to be examined and approved by the International Olympic Committee.
