Maqiao ancient cultural site
In December 1959, pieces of antlers and red impression soft pottery were found in the 1.5-meter-deep stratum. The Shanghai Municipal Committee of cultural relics preservation excavated them twice in 1960 and 1966. The unearthed relics include Neolithic Liangzhu culture relics and cultural relics of Tang, song, Ming and Qing Dynasties, which are distributed in five soil layers. The excavation of these cultural relics provides material materials for the study of the land formation and development in Shanghai. In 1960, archaeologists pushed the history of Shanghai to 2000 years. In 1977, the site was listed as a municipal cultural relic protection unit. In 1981, the people's Government of Shanghai county set up a monument. The fourth layer of the site is a typical remains of Taihu Lake area (including Hangzhou Bay Area), which was named Maqiao culture in 1982.

Naming
About 5500 years ago, the Maqiao site was formed on land. During the transitional period from Songze culture to Liangzhu culture, the ancestors began to breed here. In the Xia and Shang Dynasties, it became the largest and most typical village in the area around the lake, with a total area of more than 150000 square meters. From the spring and Autumn period to the Tang, song and Yuan Dynasties, it has always been the settlement of the ancestors. In 1982, Maqiao site was named "Maqiao culture" by archaeologists.
