In the design, the buildings with different heights and volumes are overlapped and crisscrossed. The long charm of Songze culture is solidified into a shape full of changes and flexibility, and the perception of ancient culture is integrated into the architectural form. The overall form of the building is simple and solemn, just like the epitome of an ancient village, which conforms to the human landscape of Jiangnan Water Town and the natural landscape of water system. With the combination of small bridge, flowing water, village and courtyard, the modern and history are fixed in the Ruins Museum, giving the museum rich regional characteristics and humanistic atmosphere. Songze site is the birthplace of Shanghai ancient culture, known as the "source of Shanghai". Found in 1957, the site is located in Songze village, Zhaoxiang Town, Qingpu District. "Songze" means "a highland in the wetland of Wusong River Basin". About 7000 years ago, the land in Shanghai was uplifted. About 6000 years ago, people belonging to Majiabang culture came to Shanghai, and Songze was their original home. Zhang Lan, director of Shanghai History Museum, said that Songze culture is the first Culture named after the place name of Shanghai and the earliest culture of Shanghai aborigines.
There are many "Shanghai No.1" on display in the museum. "Shanghai's first man" was discovered in the tomb of Majiabang culture period when archaeologists excavated the Songze site for the fifth time in the spring of 2004. This is a male aged between 25 and 30. According to archaeologists, this age was already an "old man" at that time.
The museum also displays the remains of carbonized rice, the earliest cultivated rice unearthed in Shanghai, known as "the first rice in Shanghai". This is the first rice remains found in China, which provides direct evidence for the origin of rice farming in China.
Different from other museums, the Songze site museum is built on the site of the site excavation.
