Yangxian Hall
Yangxian hall is located at No.1, Yiwang Road, Gaoqiao Town, Pudong New Area, Shanghai. It was built in the early 1930s with a construction area of about 1000 square meters, a base area of about 440 square meters and a main building of about 640 square meters. It is a brick and wood structure of Chinese and Western styles. Now, the building has been listed as a cultural relic protection unit at the district level. As a historical and cultural exhibition hall of Gaoqiao, it is open to the public free of charge.
Historical allusions
The house was built by Shen Jinfu
He was born in 1886. He was a poor family. At the age of 14, he went out to work as an apprentice. Later, he bought a sewing machine with the help of his father-in-law. His wife worked as a tailor to accumulate capital. After that, he raised money and ran a "Wuyang shop". The shop is located at Gongyi Wharf in Nanshi, Shanghai, named "Jintai". He became rich by doing business with customers from the upper reaches of the Huangpu River. He bought land at the end of the pawn bridge on the East Street to build a new house, named "Yangxian hall". The builder is Cai Shaoqi, Shen Jinfu's in laws. Shen Jinfu pursues firmness in everything and strives for perfection in materials. Due to the pursuit of high standards, his energy was exhausted and he died of illness before completion. It was completed in 1933 and damaged when Shanghai was liberated in 1949. Since then, most of the houses have been sublet to 15 households, and the houses have been greatly damaged.
building structure
From the front, it is a Chinese style courtyard with one hall and two rooms. Looking from the back across the river, the spacious terrace has the style of Western villa. The main building is a three story building with five bay hatchback rooms. In the middle of the ground floor is a large living room with three bays. In front of the hall is a front patio, and the two sides of the hall are wing rooms. There are five rooms on the second floor, including a hall, two wing rooms and two small rooms. The south side of the second floor has a spacious corridor and balcony along the river.
The top floor of the main building is a pseudo three storey building, which is divided into five rooms. Four tiger skylights are stretched out on the roof for lighting. All external walls are plastered with cement. To the east of the main building is a study on the second floor, with a basement and a sun terrace on the roof. There is a back yard in the south of the main building. There are 1 meter wide passageways on both sides of the main building. There are walls on the outside of the passageways and the outside of the front and rear patios.
There are six two-story Street houses on the north side of the street. Western building materials and architectural styles are adopted, while western skeletons are used for Chinese style houses. Structurally, the main building is supported by a reinforced concrete frame with a Chinese style green tile roof. The gables at the corner of the house have Western-style patterns. The revetment by the river is very strong. The interior decoration of the building is particular. It is the first house in the town with a basement, and the building materials are particular.
