The old Shanghai Museum, designed by the famous architect Dong Dayou, started construction in 1934 and opened in 1936.
architectural composition
The old Shanghai Museum is 24 meters high with a building area of 1900 square meters. It looks like the drum tower in Beijing, with double eaves and glazed tile roof. The platform around it is surrounded by imitation stone watchposts and fences. The facade is built with artificial stones. It is a model of the combination of traditional Chinese style and modern style. The old Shanghai Museum, the old Shanghai Library and Jiangwan gymnasium were regarded as "the best in the Far East". In particular, the museum and library imitating the Drum Tower of Chinese architecture can be called the twin constellations in the history of modern architecture.
