Yunjing Temple
Yunjing temple is located in Wanzi village, Baqiao District, eastern suburb of Xi'an city. According to inscriptions and historical research, Yunjing temple was built in the fourth year of kaihuang reign of Emperor Wen of Sui Dynasty (584 AD). It was a famous ancient temple. In Sui and Tang Dynasties, the temple had a large scale (covering an area of more than 100 mu) and was the activity center of linjizong Buddhism. Li Shimin, Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty, named it Yunjing Temple according to "baking can be cloud, riding can be Scripture, and policy can be Temple".
About Yunjing Temple
Master Xuanzang of Tang Dynasty came back from India and classified the Scriptures in Yunjing temple, so Yunjing temple is also called "fenjing Temple".
Topography of Yunjing Temple
Yunjing Temple faces the west, surrounded by slopes on three sides and facing water on one side (Yunjing Temple faces Chanhe River). The terrain is like a dustpan. This kind of terrain is very consistent with the Buddhist concept of geomantic omen.
Master Xuanzang of Tang Dynasty was buried in Yunjing temple after his death
In the first year of Emperor Li zhilinde (664 AD), master Xuanzang died in Yuhua Palace (now Tongchuan, Shaanxi Province) and was buried in Yunjing temple.
Why should master Xuanzang be moved
Because the place where Xuanzang was buried in the early Tang Dynasty was too close to Chang'an City, it was easy for Gaozong, his royal family members and civil and military officials of the Manchu Dynasty to see the White Pagoda where Xuanzang was buried. According to our research, Yunjing temple is located on the half waist of the west slope of Bailuyuan, on the same horizontal line with Chang'an city of Tang Dynasty, facing each other across the Chan River. As the sun sets in the west, looking east from the ancient Chang'an City, the Yunjing temple is clear at a glance.
Five years after the death of master Xuanzang, he was moved to the present Xingjiao temple in the second year of Emperor Gaozong (669 AD).
