Ant Island

Ant Island is a small island in Zhoushan archipelago in the East China Sea. Looking down from a height, the area of Ant Island is very small, and the terrain is mainly mountainous. It looks like an ant crawling in the East Sea, so it is called Ant Island. Ant Island is the smallest island in Zhoushan Archipelago. Ant Island is located in the southeast of Zhoushan Islands, in the Golden Triangle tourist area of Putuo District, Zhoushan, across the sea from Shenjiamen and adjacent to Taohua island. It is 6.5 nautical miles away from Shenjiamen fishing port. The land area of the township is 2.64 square kilometers, with a population of 4600. It has three administrative villages. Mayidao township is an advanced unit of rural socialist construction in China; a demonstration township of modernization of fishing and rural areas in Zhejiang Province; a strong educational town in Zhejiang Province; an advanced unit of "six one" project of environmental protection in Zhejiang Province; a health Township in Zhoushan City; a demonstration site of ecological (township) town construction in Zhoushan City; and one of the first batch of well-off townships in Zhoushan City. According to records, the history of human settlements on the island has been more than 300 years ago. The island is composed of two islands and five mounds. The sea area is vast. It is 18.52 kilometers away from the land of qiaomaishan port. It is divided into East Ant Island and West Ant Island. The shortest distance between the two islands is 1000 meters. The total area of East Ant Island is about 1.5 square kilometers, with an altitude of 85 meters; the West Ant Island is slender, narrow and flat, Southeast and northwest, with a length of 3.5 kilometers, a width of 0.7 kilometers, an area of about 2 square kilometers, and an altitude of 54.6 meters. The spotted seals on Ant Island stay on the beach almost all day when there is no human disturbance. It is found that the sea ice in Jinzhou Bay is basically melting after the middle of March, and the number of spotted seals increases significantly at that time. The number of spotted seals on the beach of Ant Island reaches more than 120 at the most, and gradually decreases after the last ten days of May.

Legend of Ant Island

There is an old legend about Ant Island. It is said that long ago, the Dragon King of the East China Sea and the Dragon King of the West China Sea fought for a pearl from deep water to shallow water, where they stranded their bodies. The ants by the sea want to eat the dragon meat and live forever. They seek the way to soar. That is to say, they cross the sea to eat the dragon meat on the drives of two Dragon Kings. After eating the dragon meat, the ants fall to the bottom of the sea and turn into a meat insect (sea cucumber) with flesh spines. Over time, the two Dragon Kings' drives and the Pearl form two islands and a mound reef. Around the two islands, there are also dark meat insects like ant colonies（ Sea cucumber). Later, at the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, in order to conquer the world, the Ming army and the remnant army of the Yuan Dynasty fought for many years in southern Liaoning. A thousand family official of Ming army was seriously injured. He fled all the way to the seaside and fainted beside a fishing village. He was rescued by an old fisherman. In a coma, Qianhu dreamed that a fairy told her that she could go out to sea to find two dragon like islands, one big and the other small. She told her that there were some creatures that could eat dragon's flesh on the sea floor around her. They could catch them and eat them to relieve their injuries and improve their health. After waking up, Qianhu begged the old fisherman to take him out to sea to find the spirit of the island. The old fisherman heard that the situation in the dream of a thousand households was also strange. When the injury of a thousand households was better, he sailed out to sea. After a thousand households went out to sea, they saw two islands the same size as the Fairy Island in their dreams. The reefs around the islands were dense, and the trees on the islands were shady. The wind was gathering and the aura was full, but there was no one. The old fisherman dived into the bottom of the sea and saw the earth colored fleshy insects (sea cucumbers) with flesh spines like elixirs. They were like ants, so Qianhu named the two islands Ant Island. The fishermen and a thousand households fished the meat worms (sea cucumbers) and ate them. In less than one month, the health of a thousand households was fully recovered, while the old fisherman was ruddy and loud. The old fisherman went back to the fishing village to greet the fishermen to move to the island. There were more than ten families, most of them surnamed Chen Wang. Later, a thousand families and these fishermen, surnamed Chen and surnamed Wang, lived and multiplied on the island, fishing, hunting, farming and weaving, forming a natural fishing village (Ant Island Village). They have been fishing for meat and insects (sea cucumbers) for generations to keep healthy, and most of them live a long life. In order to be grateful to the fairies in the dream of thousands of households, we built the goddess of the sea temple on the island and worshiped it every year. After that, people in the island eat sea cucumbers to strengthen their body and increase their intelligence, and many of them become officials. As it is located at 39.11 degrees north latitude, which is the boundary between the cold and the heat of the earth, and is generally recognized as the most suitable latitude for the growth of marine organisms in the world, the wild sea cucumbers in Ant Island are generally collected in two periods each year, and the full-time fixed-point collection is required. The non adult sea cucumbers less than four to five years are not collected, the weak sea cucumbers less than two kilograms are not collected, and the wild sea cucumbers are not collected at the ecological sampling points. Spring (known as spring ginseng) is mostly from around Qingming to June 1; autumn (known as autumn ginseng) is mostly from October to light snow or heavy snow (December 8). This is mainly considered from the protection of natural ecological reproduction of wild sea cucumbers, that is, to ban catching during spawning. Of course, it is also related to the summer sleep of sea cucumber. The geographical location of Ant Island is unique. The body wall of wild sea cucumber is thick, so its nutritional value is very high.
