The king of medicine is the honorific title of ancient famous doctors, or the king of medicine. According to different times and regions, the characters referred to by Yao Wang are different. Among them, Bian Que in the spring and Autumn period, PI Tong in the Eastern Han Dynasty, Sun Simiao, Wei cizang, Wei Shanjun and Wei Gudao (teacher Wei) in the Tang Dynasty are famous. Later on, these famous doctors were deified and worshipped as the king of medicine by the people in different areas, and temples were set up to offer sacrifices.
Historical evolution
Anguo City, known as Qizhou in ancient times, is one of the famous distribution centers of traditional Chinese medicine in Chinese history. It is known as "medicine city" and "the first medicine city in the world". The prosperity of Anguo medicine market originated from Yaowang temple. Those who take part in the medicine market will always go to pay homage to the medicine king temple. It is reported that Yang Yi's new play "Yang Guang's affairs" has been filmed in Yaowang temple.
geographical position
Cultural relics protection
Located in the south of Anguo City (formerly Nanguan), Anguo Yaowang temple is the largest ancient architectural complex commemorating the medical saints of past dynasties in China. Founded in the Northern Song Dynasty during the period of Taiping and Xingguo (976-984 AD), it has a history of 1000 years and is a national key cultural relics protection unit.
Pitong, the medicine King worshipped in the temple, was one of the twenty-eight generals under Liu Xiu, the founding emperor of the Eastern Han Dynasty, and the prefect of Quyang (now Jinzhou City, Hebei Province). PI Tong assisted Liu Xiu to fight in the world. He was brave, good at fighting, loyal and resourceful. He made immortal contributions to the establishment and defense of the Eastern Han Dynasty. He was an official of Taichang Shaofu (equivalent to Prime Minister).
PI Tong loved medicine and was popular with the army and the people. After his death, he was buried outside the South Gate of Qizhou.
Construction scale
In the second year of Yongle (1404 A.D.) of the Ming Dynasty, the Yao Wang Temple was expanded with PI Tong tomb as the center, imitating the Yao Wang Temple in Lin'an (now Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province) of the Song Dynasty. After repair in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it became a new scale.
The Yaowang temple complex covers an area of more than 3200 square meters. It sits east to west and has a well-organized structure. It is composed of memorial archway, horse hall, bell and Drum Tower, Yaowang tomb Pavilion, stele room, ten famous doctors hall, Yaowang main hall, back hall, Guan Hanqing Memorial Hall and ancient Huai square. The plaque of "Yaowang Temple" hanging on the mountain gate was inscribed by Liu Yong, a great scholar of Dongge in Qianlong period of Qing Dynasty. The memorial archway outside the gate of the mountain is a double eaves and veranda style building, with three rooms and four columns covered by yellow glazed tiles and colored brackets. In the middle of the plaque, there are large gold characters depicting "Xianling Hebei". There are a pair of stone lions on both sides of the archway. Outside the stone lions, there are two iron flagpoles, each weighing about 30000 Jin, with a height of 24 meters.
There is a couplet on the two iron flagpoles: "the iron tree has two flags, the light shoots at the bucket; the spirit is universal and the virtue is towering." The wind chime is hanging on the flagpole, ringing in the wind, giving people a sense of distant solemnity.
The tomb Pavilion of Yao Wang is in the middle courtyard of Yao Wang Temple. The tomb is Pavilion style, with wooden arch ridge and glazed tile roof. It is exquisite and unique in appearance, full of national characteristics. The inscription on the tombstone reads "the tomb of Huixian king of Lingzhao of Ming Dynasty was granted by imperial edict".
Inscriptions
There are dozens of Steles in the north and South corridors and the west of the tombstone, which record the development and changes of Yaowang temple and Yaodu.
There are ten famous medical figures, including Bian que, Hua Tuo, Zhang Zhongjing, Zhang Zihe and Liu Hejian, in the side halls on the north and south sides of Yao Wang Temple Pavilion. These statues are said to be the work of Zhang Yuanzu, a clay figurine in Tianjin. They are neat and delicate, with both form and spirit. The main hall of Yao Wang is the main hall of Yao Wang Temple. In the center of the hall is a sitting statue of Yao Wang in a Dragon Robe, full of vitality, dignified and kind. On both sides of the king of medicine, there were eight majestic generals, which added a solemn and dignified atmosphere to the main hall.
The main hall is magnificent, exquisitely carved and covered with glazed tiles. The medicine market in Anguo originated from the medicine king temple, which is well-known for the medicine market. In 1981, the national medical delegation visited the Yaowang temple in Osaka, Japan. Unexpectedly, the first sentence of the female commentator was "the Yaowang of Japan is from Qizhou of China".
Folklore
There is a legend about the origin of the medicine King Temple in Anguo. It is said that the king of the song and Qin Dynasties was ill and could not be cured after a long period of treatment. Pitong was cured. The king of the song and Qin Dynasties sent envoys to ask his name and tell him that "the outsider in the South Gate of Qizhou is also the place where he sent envoys. Only then can he know that he is a God", so the king was granted a temple to worship him.
In 1101 ad, Pitong was granted the title of marquis, and later he was granted the title of Duke. In 1270 ad, Pitong was granted the title of "Ming Lingzhao huixianyou king". With the emperor's continuous granting of Pitong, the influence of "medicine king" is growing. The establishment of Yaowang Temple reflects the later generations' nostalgia for PI Tong's virtue to the people.
Since the temple was built for Pitong, the common people often turn to the king of medicine for help when they are sick. They often come to offer incense. The pharmacists take advantage of the opportunity to sell medicine. As a result, the temple fair of medicinal materials has gradually formed every April 28 of the lunar calendar. It has lasted for hundreds of years, and there is even a saying that "when the herbs come to Anguo, the medicine will become fragrant after passing through Qizhou.".
tourist resources
Yaowang temple has three highest tourist resources in China: the first is the largest architectural complex of Yaowang temple in China; the second is that Yaowang tomb was built in the temple courtyard, which is unique in China; the third is that on the square outside the temple, there are 24 meters high cast iron flagpoles with each weight of 15 tons. This shape is unique in the country. This ancient building was destroyed during the war and the cultural revolution.
Incense is very popular
Since 1985, the Yaowang temple has been restored, and its appearance has taken on a new look. After the establishment of Yaowang temple, worshiping and incense were very popular, and then it gradually developed into an'guo temple fair. It is said that Anguo pharmaceutical originated from Yaowang temple. Yaowang temple has been listed as a national key cultural relics protection unit.
