Avalokitesvara, literally speaking, is a Bodhisattva who observes the voice of the people in the world. It is one of the four Bodhisattvas. He is dignified and kind-hearted, often holding a bottle of willow, with boundless wisdom and magic power, great compassion, universal salvation of human disasters. When people encounter disasters, they just need to read their name and go to save them, so they are called GuanShiYin (see the Lotus Sutra for details). It is also recorded in the classic that "if there are more beings than lust, and if you often revere Guanyin Bodhisattva, you will get rid of lust. If you are angry and often reverent to Guanyin Bodhisattva, you will get rid of anger. If you are too stupid and often want to respect Guanyin Bodhisattva, you will get rid of it. "In Buddhism, he is the first Bodhisattva under the seat of Amitabha Buddha, the leader of the Western Paradise. Together with dashizhi Bodhisattva, he is the escort Bodhisattva beside Amitabha Buddha, and is also known as the" three saints of the West. ".
Guanyin statue is the largest granite statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva in China and even in the world. The main body of the statue is 33 meters high, the cross section is 10.2 meters wide, the volume is 630 cubic meters, and the total weight is 3300 tons. It is composed of 999 pieces of 0.5 to 8 tons of Putian high-quality granite in Fujian Province. The statues were designed by Chen Baoru, a first-class sculptor of the state. All of them were hand carved. It took four years from September 1997 to June 2001. The total number of work days was 98600.

On the morning of November 4, 2001 (lunar September 19), the opening ceremony of the statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva and the foundation laying ceremony of Dongguan Guanyin temple was held in Guanyin Mountain Forest Park. On that day, more than 30000 monks, laymen and politicians from home and abroad gathered in front of the statue of Avalokitesvara to witness the largest and highest Buddhist event in the Pearl River Delta region. Yongxing Changlao, the world-renowned Buddhist leader and President of Hong Kong Bodhi society, attended the ceremony. All the present believers were lucky to see that during the performance and chanting of the Kaiguang ceremony, the sky was full of auspicious clouds and shining golden lights, which were reflected on the gold body of Guanyin Bodhisattva. The purple light and auspicious omens were everywhere. All the people were jubilant for a moment, like the holy dew bathing the body, which made all the spectators sincerely convinced.
Design conception
In 1999, Nanshan Guanyin passed the examination and approval and started construction. According to reports, Nanshan Guanyin is 108 meters high, which is the highest Guanyin on the sea in the world. Guanyin is a symbol of compassion, wisdom and harmony.
The statue of Avalokitesvara is built on a 120 meter diameter artificial island (jingangzhou) on the sea. The artificial island is a round palace with an area of 15000 square meters. The statue of Avalokitesvara, the diamond island on the sea and the Yuantong hall are connected with the land and the 60000 square meter Avalokitesvara square by a 280 meter long Puji bridge. Its design and creation have been affirmed by experts in Buddhism, art and architecture.

This sitting statue of Avalokitesvara is about 1.86 meters high, which is a male Avalokitesvara in the early Buddhist culture. After thousands of years, the painting is mottled, but the overall preservation condition is good, the Dharma phase is solemn and kind, the lines are warm and smooth, the overall statue is vivid and dignified, which is a rare art treasure of the Tang and Song dynasties.
The construction of the world's highest Guanyin statue on the sea took six years and cost 800 million yuan.
China News Agency, Haikou, April 24 (Xinhua) in the morning, 108 eminent monks from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, Hong Kong and Macao jointly enlightened Nanshan sea Guanyin, and more than 20000 believers jointly ushered in a grand event in the Buddhist world. The publication of Hainan Daily disclosed the whole process of the construction of the statue of Guanyin on the sea in Nanshan.
Inspired by Jianzhen's six eastward trips to Japan, in 1993, Ruan Chongwu, then Secretary of Hainan provincial Party committee, proposed to build a temple to commemorate Jianzhen, an eminent monk of the Tang Dynasty, at the request of Buddhist circles, so he proposed to name it "Nanshan Temple". According to historical records, Jianzhen, the founder of Luzong, traveled to Japan for the fifth time during the Tianbao reign of the Tang Dynasty. He was caught in a hurricane and drifted to Nanshan in Sanya for more than a year.
Jianzhen was protected by Guanyin Bodhisattva, and his sixth eastward voyage was successful. In 1993, the construction of Nanshan Temple was supported by Zhao Puchu, then president of China Buddhist Association. In June of the same year, Nanshan Temple entered into actual operation. In January 1994, Zhao Puchu, together with famous figures from Buddhist and architectural circles, visited Nanshan for site selection. In February of the same year, "Nanshan Guanyin on the sea" was officially included in the plan, and the height of the statue was determined to be 108 meters. In January 1996, Hainan sent another person to Beijing to bring a sample of Guanyin to solicit Zhao Puchu's opinions. One year later, the Religious Affairs Bureau of the State Council officially approved the "Guanyin on the sea" project, which lasted six years and cost 800 million yuan. On October 27, 1999, the Guanyin project on the sea officially started. On January 5, 2000, the construction of Gangzhou project successfully withstood the test of two strong typhoons of magnitude 12 that year. In December 2000, the main part of Yuantong hall project was completed. In January 2003, the main part of the King Kong throne project was completed. In March 2003, the main steel structure of Guanyin statue was installed.
Project cost
It is understood that the total investment of the whole project is 800 million yuan. During this period, he received generous support from people at home and abroad: Mr. Ma Wanqi of Macao donated 100000 yuan; Mr. Nan Huaijin of Taiwan donated one million yuan. Many people plant bodhi trees in Nanshan Park and donate money. In December 2003, the 11th Panchen Lama also sent a "release money" of 11180 yuan
