Niuwang temple
Niuwang temple in Chengdu was built in 1668, the seventh year of Kangxi reign in Qing Dynasty. It has a history of more than 300 years. During the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, large-scale maintenance was carried out. It was originally located in niuwangmiao street outside the east gate of Chengdu old city.
According to legend, when the rinderpest was rampant in Chengdu Plain, people turned pale when talking about cattle. Zhang dedi, governor of Sichuan Province, built this Cow King temple outside the adjacent bull market in order to appease the people. And cast a iron ox, dedicated to the temple.
When the Niuwang temple in Chengdu was completed, the people who depended on the heaven came to worship the fruit one after another. It is hoped that the king of cattle will protect his descendants and eliminate the plague, so as to ensure that one side of farming will benefit the people. From then on, year after year, incense and sacrifice continued.
Today, more than 300 years of vicissitudes, temples collapsed, iron cattle damaged. But niuwangmiao street and niushikou, which witnessed the rise and fall of niuwangmiao, did not go with it. On the contrary, it has become the synonym of local name.
In 2003, Mr. Liu Yancheng, a private entrepreneur, collected and sorted out the original beams, columns and components of the temple, and rebuilt the Niuwang temple in Sansheng Township in the east of the city.
