Putuo Mountain Buddhist Museum

Putuo Mountain Buddhist museum is located in the east of Duobao pagoda, one of the three treasures of Putuo Mountain in Zhejiang Province. The total cost of the project is 7.04 million yuan and the construction area is 3477 square meters. Putuo Mountain Buddhist Museum, with a total height of 10.8 meters, a width of 46 meters and a depth of 45.2 meters, is equipped with exhibition room, reception room, conference room, ticket room and guard room. The museum has a platform of about 400 square meters, connecting the pagoda to form a famous new scenic spot.

The most famous jade Avalokitesvara in the museum is designed and carved by Wei Changhai, a master of Chinese arts and crafts. After the opening ceremony, the 18 arm jade Avalokitesvara, the largest and most precious statue in the world, was officially opened to believers and tourists.

Kaiguang Law Society

The jade Avalokitesvara is designed and carved by Wei Changhai, a master of Chinese arts and crafts. It is 1.58 meters high, 35 cm thick, and 1.74 meters thick. The total weight is more than 800 kg. From conception, design to carving, the whole work took three and a half years to complete. The whole body of this Avalokitesvara is carved from a whole piece of jadeite. The lotus platform on the base is carved from red sandalwood. The selected materials are very rare and precious. In his design, master Wei Changhai shows the compassion spirit of Guanyin to save the suffering. The overall shape is as good as the law, without losing the unique temperament of Guanyin's kindness and softness, which fully shows the mass demand of contemporary Chinese Guanyin belief and the superb skills of contemporary arts and crafts masters

Guanyin is the most famous Bodhisattva in Asian Mahayana Buddhist belief circle. The belief of Guanyin Bodhisattva has been widely spread for thousands of years. It is the embodiment of the compassion and salvation spirit of Mahayana Buddhism. Regardless of the pure land, Zen, and esoteric sects, any Dharma of extricating bitterness and relieving happiness can not be separated from Guanyin Bodhisattva. Compassion is Guanyin, which is well known to women and children in China. As the most famous Guanyin Dojo, Zhoushan Putuo has become the most sacred place in the eyes of Guanyin believers, not only in China, but also pilgrims from all over the world.

Collection

Putuo Mountain has a long Buddhist culture and many historical relics. The Putuo Mountain Cultural Relics Museum, originally located in Yueling nunnery, has collected more than 2000 pieces of cultural relics collected by temples all over the mountain, including not only the imperial edicts, inscriptions, imperial dragon robes of the Ming and Qing emperors, Buddha statues and Yuanbao from Tibet, but also Buddha statues, copper screens and Bodhi leaves from Japan. In recent years, he also welcomed Buddhist relics from Taiwan Province, the treasure island of the motherland. It shows the development history of Buddhism in Putuo Mountain and the cultural, artistic and economic exchanges with the people of Southeast Asia. There are also many works of calligraphers and painters in the past dynasties. Among them, the painting of the palace of mountains and seas by Yuan Dynasty, the painting of Sanqing by monk Xugu in Qing Dynasty and his 12 freehand landscape albums are rare treasures with unique style and rich flavor of life in terms of color, line and composition.

Relevant background

Famous calligraphers and painters Cheng Shifa, Liu Haisu, Luo Ming, Feng Zikai, Guan Liang and Qian qiantie visited Mount Putuo one after another, and wrote poems and paintings for the museum, or presented art treasures. However, the Putuo Mountain Cultural Relic Museum, which was originally located in Yueling temple, was located in a remote place, and it was very humid with many potential safety hazards, so it was forced to close later. In order to let the Chinese and foreign tourists enjoy the historical relics of Mount Putuo, further enrich their sightseeing life, and promote the construction of famous Buddhist cultural mountains, in 2006, the Putuo Mountain Buddhist Association, with the strong support of all parties in the society, started to build a new high-grade Buddhist museum project of Mount Putuo.
