Hollywood Road
Hollywood Road, sometimes called Hollywood Road, is located from central to Sheung Wan in Hong Kong. It is the first street built after the opening of Hong Kong. The name "Hollywood Road" has nothing to do with Hollywood in the American film industry, but comes from the Hollywood in the early years around Hollywood Road.
history
Hollywood Road is the first street in the colonial period. It was built as early as 1841 when the British landed on Hong Kong Island. At the foot of Taiping mountain, Hollywood Road was close to the sea before reclamation. After more than 100 years of reclamation in central, it is far away from the sea. Many people think that Hollywood Road got its name from Hollywood, the movie production site in California, USA. In fact, the name of the road originated from the Hollywood trees planted on both sides of Hollywood Road in the early years, so it was named Hollywood Road, which was transliterated as Hollywood Road in Chinese. When the name appeared, Hollywood in the United States had not yet appeared.
Since the early days of the port opening, Hollywood Road has been a place where Chinese live, mainly in the lower class. For example, Donald Tsang, the current (2007) chief executive of Hong Kong, once lived in Hollywood Road when he was a child. The man Wu Temple at the junction of Hollywood Road and stairway street was completed long before the opening of Hong Kong. It was a place where Hong Kong civilians dealt with economic disputes at the beginning of the 20th century, and many Chinese paid homage to it. The old central police station in the central part of Hollywood Road was completed in 1864 and expanded in 1919. Today it is also listed as a statutory monument in Hong Kong.
Tourists mainly come to buy Chinese antiques, many of which are precious cultural relics, and the source of goods has always been controversial. Therefore, the Hong Kong government rarely mentions Hollywood Road's Antiques business in its tourism promotion activities.
characteristic
Today's Hollywood Road is characterized by the combination of Chinese and Western cultures in Hong Kong.
As the British people who ruled Hong Kong in the early years concentrated in the mid levels of Hollywood Road, SOHO, the English name of SOHO in the southern section of Hollywood Road in central, originated from Soho in London, and also from the abbreviation of South of Hollywood Road. Today's Soho district is full of many restaurants and bars with foreign characteristics.
The eastern end of Hollywood Road is connected with Lan Kwai Fong. The old central police station (former Hong Kong Police Headquarters) is also located on this street. The Dragon-I bar in the central square beside the old central police station has attracted many football stars to visit Hong Kong for entertainment. The central to mid levels escalator system connecting central and mid levels also passes through Hollywood Road.
At the end of Sheung Wan, near Hollywood Road, is a famous collection of antiques and nostalgic items. It is also the site of the famous yuwenwu temple - Hollywood Road. There are three antique streets in Hong Kong. The most famous Hollywood Road was once listed as one of the ten most popular tourist attractions in the world by a foreign magazine. This ancient street on Hong Kong Island is long and winding, stretching from central to shanghuan and Xihuan. There are more than 100 antique shops, large and small, with many kinds of excellent Chinese antiques, such as ceramics, jade, stone carvings, ivory carvings, bronze, silver, lacquerware, furniture, screens, calligraphy and paintings, ancient books, and rare ancient Chinese wedding costumes.
