Introduction of former residence
On the wall of the courtyard, a metal plate engraved with "Yin Haiguang's former residence". The sign introduces the house and its former occupants in Chinese and English: "the former residence of Yin Haiguang, a great philosopher and liberal mentor in Taiwan. He taught in the Department of philosophy at National Taiwan University. He advocated liberalism all his life. He adhered to the spirit of "rather die than live in silence". He was brave enough to fight against authoritarianism, criticize current politics, enlighten academic and social conscience, and contributed to the promotion of Taiwan's democratic movement. "
historical background
This Japanese style wooden house was built by Taiwan University using the building materials left after the demolition of the police dormitory. In 1956, Yin Haiguang lived in this dormitory. In his spare time, he dug ditches by himself and piled up waste soil into mountains, named "Yugong River" and "Gufeng mountain" respectively. He lived here until his death in 1969.
The former residence has been silent for a long time. But in the 1950s and 1960s, it was always lively. There were always college students coming to drink coffee and talk. The neighborhood children also liked to barbecue and play with water. Yin Haiguang is known as "the best-selling professor of NTU". He inherited the liberalism advocated in the early period of the May 4th Movement and emphasized the moral courage to tell the truth.
Celebrity influence
Famous scholars Lin Yusheng, Li Ao, Wang Xiaobo and Chen guying were all trained by him. Li Ao once described Yin Haiguang like this: "since the KMT failed in the mainland and fled to Taiwan, they reviewed the reasons for its failure. They can be divided into two groups: one group thinks that autocracy is not enough, and that more autocracy will be needed in the future; the other group thinks that freedom and democracy are not enough, and that it is necessary to abandon the stereotype and make deep and progressive introspection in the future.
Few people do this kind of introspection, but the most successful one is Yin Haiguang. The former residence opened on November 14.
