In July 1909, China's higher maritime education began in Shanghai. Tang Wenzhi, the supervisor of Shanghai higher industrial school (formerly Nanyang public school) of the Ministry of post and telecommunications in the late Qing Dynasty, added the shipping administration department (navigation specialty) to the school, which lasted for four years, creating a precedent for China's higher maritime education.
In 1911 (the first month of the third year of Xuantong), the Ministry of post and Telecommunications decided to set up a merchant shipping school in Wusong, Shanghai, and ordered Tang Wenzhi to run it. In August, Shanghai wusongpao Taiwan school was built. The school was named "the higher merchant shipping School of the Ministry of Posts and communications". It is still managed by the higher Industrial School of the Ministry of Posts and communications. Tang Wenzhi is the supervisor of the school. Xia sunpeng is appointed as the dean of the school. The shipping department of Shanghai higher industrial school belongs to the merchant shipping school, which is the first Maritime College in Chinese history born in Shanghai.
In January 1912, the Shanghai higher merchant shipping School of the Ministry of Posts and telecommunications was renamed Wusong merchant shipping school by the Ministry of communications of the Republic of China. Tang Wenzhi was concurrently president of the school.
In March 1912, the Ministry of communications of the government of the Republic of China appointed SA Zhenbing, the former Navy minister and commander in chief in the late Qing Dynasty, as the principal of Wusong merchant shipping school. On March 15, SA Zhenbing arrived. On September 22, Wusong merchant shipping school moved into Wusong Pao Taiwan new school building, named national Wusong Merchant Shipping College. The school covers an area of about 100 mu, with practice factory, swimming pool, playground, library, instrument room, etc.
In 1915, Wusong merchant shipping school was stopped by the order of the government of the Republic of China. All the school buildings, training ships, books and instruments were taken over by the Ministry of Navy, and the Naval School was established.
In 1928, the Ministry of communications of the national government decided to take back the Wusong merchant shipping school and prepare to restore it.
On September 1, 1929, Wusong merchant shipping school was officially resumed. It was named Wusong Merchant Shipping College of the Ministry of communications. Wang Boqun, Minister of the Ministry of communications, was the president of the school. Yang Zhixiong, vice president of the school, presided over the daily affairs of the school. The school building is still the original Wusong merchant shipping school. On October 8, Wusong Merchant Shipping College officially opened. The school designated October 8, 1929 as its anniversary.
After the January 28 Incident in 1932, the school building of Wusong Merchant Shipping College was bombed by the Japanese army, and the school rented a house in Shanghai.
In the spring of 1933, the building of Wusong Merchant Shipping College was restored, and the school was moved back and renamed Wusong Merchant Shipping College. In August, Wusong Merchant Shipping College was ordered to suspend its preparatory course and set up an affiliated high school.
In August 1935, Wusong Merchant Shipping College stopped recruiting senior high school students.
In 1937, the Japanese invaders invaded China and the war of resistance against Japan broke out. In the "August 13" battle of Songhu, the school building of Wusong Merchant Shipping College was destroyed by the invading artillery fire, and the school was forced to stop.
In June 1939, due to the war, the Education Committee of the national defense supreme assembly of the national government decided to restore Wusong Merchant Shipping College in Chongqing, which was renamed "national Chongqing Merchant Shipping College", and was subordinate to the Ministry of education. On November 27, 1939, the national Chongqing Merchant Shipping College held a grand opening ceremony on the "Jiangshun" ship.
In the autumn of 1942, the new school building of national Chongqing Merchant Shipping College was completed in Ilan river.
In 1943, the national Chongqing Merchant Shipping College was incorporated into the national Jiaotong University (Chongqing headquarters).
In November 1945, after the victory of the Anti Japanese War, the teachers and students of national Chongqing Merchant Shipping College, which was incorporated into Jiaotong University, moved back to Shanghai.
On October 14, 1946, the national Wusong Merchant Shipping College officially opened at 505 East Changzhi Road, Shanghai (the former site of leishide Institute of Technology).
So far, the school has been closed for three times and finally resumed in Shanghai. The two subjects of navigation and marine engineering managed by Jiaotong University belong to Wusong Merchant Shipping College.
In September 1950, the Ministry of communications of the Central People's government decided, with the approval of the Ministry of education and the finance and Economic Committee, to merge Wusong Merchant Shipping College with the Department of shipping management of Shanghai Jiaotong University and the maritime class of the Tax College of the General Administration of customs, and upgrade it to the national Shanghai Shipping College, with the Department of navigation, the Department of marine engineering and the radio specialty. In October 1950, it was renamed Shanghai aeronautical college.
In 1953, Dalian Maritime College (now Dalian Maritime University) was established by the merger of Shanghai Maritime College, northeast Maritime College and Fujian Maritime College.
In 1958, the Ministry of communications decided to resume the establishment of Shanghai navigation college in Shanghai, and entrusted Shanghai Maritime Transport Bureau to be responsible for the preparation of classrooms, school buildings and other infrastructure.
On September 5, 1959, the school officially opened and was named Shanghai Maritime College. It is affiliated to the Ministry of communications and is located at 1550 Pudong Avenue.
In September 1961, the preparatory work for the establishment of Shanghai Maritime College was initially completed, so it was separated from Shanghai Maritime Bureau and directly led by the Ministry of communications. It was a key college under the Ministry of communications. The Party committee was led by the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China. At the beginning of its establishment, the school set up marine ship driving, marine engineering management, ship machinery, port machinery and other majors, and attached with a technical secondary school and an ordinary middle school with basically the same majors.
In 1962, the Ministry of communications decided to adjust the majors of its affiliated colleges and universities, successively adjusting the marine transportation majors of Shanghai Maritime University to Dalian Maritime University, the mechanical engineering majors to Wuhan Maritime Engineering College, and the management and economy majors of the two colleges to Shanghai Maritime Engineering College.
From 1962 to 1965, he successively established ocean transportation business, transportation financial accounting, English, French and other majors in Shanghai Maritime College.
In 1966, it became a key university of the Ministry of communications with the major of water transport economic management.
In 1972, various specialties of marine transportation were restored.
In 1979, it began to recruit graduate students.
In 1981, with the approval of the State Council, the University became one of the first universities in China to obtain the right to confer master's degree.
In July 1986, the graduate department was established.
Since 1994, it has the autonomy to enroll in-service graduate students through independent entrance examination.
In 1995, it was approved to recruit graduate students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
In 1996, he began to train MBA with Maastricht School of management in the Netherlands, and obtained the right to recruit foreign students.
In 1997, it became one of the 56 pilot schools for MBA postgraduates in China, and was granted the right to apply for the master's degree with the same academic level.
In 1998, with the approval of the academic degree committee of the State Council, Shanghai Maritime University became a doctoral degree awarding unit.
In 1999, Shanghai harbour school was managed by Shanghai Maritime College (now Shanghai Maritime University).
In 2000, the school implemented a system jointly built by the Ministry of communications and Shanghai Municipality, with Shanghai Municipality as the main management.
In 2004, with the approval of the Ministry of education, Shanghai Maritime University was renamed Shanghai Maritime University. On November 19 of the same year, the construction of the new school in Lingang New City broke ground.
In 2008, the Shanghai Municipal People's government signed an agreement with the Ministry of transport to jointly build Shanghai Maritime University.
In 2008, more than 20 units including Shanghai Education Commission, Shanghai urban rural construction and Transportation Commission, Shanghai Maritime University and Hongkou District People's Government jointly initiated the establishment of Shanghai International Shipping Research Center. Affiliated with Shanghai Maritime University, the center is a research and consulting institution for the development of international shipping industry, providing decision-making consultation and information services for the government, domestic and foreign enterprises and shipping institutions. It is one of the first batch of "university knowledge service platforms" established by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. In 2014, the Municipal Education Commission listed the platform as "Shanghai Collaborative Innovation Center".
In October 2008, the New Lingang New Town of Shanghai Maritime University was basically completed. The campus covers an area of 1.33 million square meters, with a total construction area of 600000 square meters, a greening rate of 52%, and a water area of 80000 square meters. In that year, the main body of the school moved to a new campus (located in the new area of Shanghai Free Trade Zone).
In 2009, China's Higher Maritime Education and Shanghai Maritime University ushered in their centenary. After 100 years, China's higher maritime education began in Shanghai. On September 23 of the same year, more than 200 alumni of Wusong Merchant Shipping College gathered in the new campus of Shanghai Maritime University to solemnly commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Wusong Merchant Shipping College, the source of China's higher maritime education. After the commemorative meeting, the 100th anniversary monument of Wusong Merchant Shipping College was unveiled. The monument symbolizes the hundred year history of Wusong Merchant Shipping College.
In 2011, with the approval of the Ministry of education, the University cooperated with the Maritime University of central and western Africa in Ghana to hold the undergraduate education project of "logistics management" and began to recruit students in Africa. This is the first overseas education project in which local colleges and universities in Shanghai awarded undergraduate diplomas of Chinese universities.
In 2012, the University was approved by the Ministry of education and officially became the "University accepting Chinese government scholarship for international students in China".
In January 2013, the inauguration ceremony of Shanghai Maritime University Dongming Road Campus and Shanghai Advanced International Shipping College was held. In April, China's first deep-sea material R & D platform, the Research Center for deep-sea equipment materials and protection engineering technology of Shanghai Ocean Administration, was inaugurated in the University. In May, it was awarded "2012-2013 National Graduate Employment typical experience university" by the Ministry of education
