In the Spring Festival of 1984, Wang Jifu, Secretary of Yantai municipal Party committee, put forward the idea of establishing Yantai University when he reported his work to Wan Li, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice premier of the State Council. Comrade Wan Li said, "we can build a university without an iron rice bowl, which is called Yantai University. Anyone who wants to learn will come. You can set up any department you need in Yantai. Yantai has broken this way. I'll give you a credit. ".

On February 19, 1984, in the report written by Yantai municipal Party committee and government to the provincial government, it was proposed that the scale of Yantai University should be 3000 people, and the overall planning covers an area of 1500 mu. It was built in July 1984 and enrolled in September 1985.

On March 24, 1984, Shandong provincial government submitted to the State Council the request for instructions on the establishment of Yantai University with the document luzhengfa (1984) No. 31.

On May 24, 1984, Wan Li met with Zhang Chengxian (member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, deputy director of the Committee of education, science, culture and health), he Dongchang (Minister of Education), Liang buting (governor of Shandong Province) and Wang Jifu at the Great Hall of the people. He said to Yantai University, "I've invited you an honorary president, Comrade Zhang Chengxian.".

On June 5, 1984, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of Yantai University by (84) JJZ No. 088.

From June 27 to 30, 1984, Zhang Chengxian and Liang buting presided over the "Conference on the preparation for the establishment of Yantai University" in Yantai Dongshan Hotel. There were more than 30 responsible comrades from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Ministry of education, Shandong provincial government, Yantai city and other relevant departments at the conference. At the meeting, it was proposed that "Yantai University should build a modern socialist university with Chinese characteristics, innovative spirit and high level, which is not only an education center but also a scientific research center, facing the whole province and the whole country, and open to overseas Chinese children. We should combine arts with science, implement the dual leadership of the Ministry of education and Shandong Province, and give priority to the province. The Ministry of education is requested to organize the support of national key universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University, to provide backbone teachers of Yantai University, and to regard this school as a pilot school for the reform of the Ministry of education. " During the preparation period, comrade Wan Li said: the starting point of the school should be higher and faster. It's not the guerrillas upgrading, but the regular army laying eggs. Tsinghua University and Peking University need long-term support.

On November 10, 1984, the Ministry of Education approved the formal establishment and enrollment of Yantai University by (84) JJZ 219 document.

On September 20, 1985, Yantai University held the opening ceremony in the auditorium of Yantai municipal government. Li Peng, then Vice Premier of the State Council, sent a congratulatory letter. Hu Yaobang, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, inscribed the name of Yantai University.

In the first half of 1990, the six-year support from Peking University and Tsinghua University for the construction of Yantai University was over. After the consultation of Shandong provincial Party committee and government, the personnel of the two universities were agreed to return to Beijing. In the same year, the "Committee of Peking University and Tsinghua University for the construction of Yantai University" was established to regularly study and guide the teaching, scientific research, discipline construction, reform and development of Yantai University.

In 1995, the University passed the qualification evaluation of undergraduate teaching level of the former State Education Commission.

In 1998, the University obtained the right to grant master's degree.

In 2004, the University won the excellent award in the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of education.

In 2007, the University was approved by the General Political Department of the Chinese people's Liberation Army as a training unit for training military cadres in general higher education.

In October 2011, Yantai University was selected into the excellent engineer education and training program of the Ministry of education to pilot "excellent engineer innovation experimental class" in vehicle engineering, computer science and technology, pharmaceutical engineering, chemical engineering and technology, energy and power engineering, etc.

In 2012, Yantai University Law School was selected into the first batch of excellent legal talents education and training plan of the Ministry of education. In 2013, civil and commercial law was selected into the first batch of excellent resource sharing courses of Chinese universities.

In October 2015, the Law School of Yantai University was identified as the first batch of "local legislation research service base", and accepted the awarding ceremony with Shandong University, Shandong University of political science and law and other five colleges and universities.

In 2019, Dean Michael Adams of the Law School of the University of New England in Australia and the Law School of Yantai University signed the joint Ph.D program agreement.

In December 2018, Yantai University won the 2018 national teaching achievement award, which is the highest honor of higher education in China, marking that the education and teaching reform of Yantai University has achieved remarkable results and the education and teaching level has reached a new height.

In December 2018, the 20th China patent award awarding conference, CO sponsored by the State Intellectual Property Office of China and the world intellectual property organization, was held in Beijing. Yantai University's patent "separation of butane and butene with methyl ethyl ketone series mixed solvents" won the gold award of China patent.

According to the notice of the general office of the Ministry of education and the Provincial Department of education on the list of national and provincial first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites in 2019, 19 majors of our university were selected as national and provincial first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites, among which law, biological science, electronic information science and technology, software engineering and other majors were selected as national first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites.
