From January 6 to 23, 1958, the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee held a meeting in Nanning. During the meeting, Chairman Mao Zedong, 65 years old, braved the severe cold of 6 or 7 degrees Celsius twice on July 7 and 11 to swim in Yongjiang River, leaving a deep memory for Nanning people. In order to commemorate Chairman Mao Zedong's tour of Yongjiang River, Nanning Revolutionary Committee built a pavilion and erected a monument in September 1974 at the place where Chairman Mao Zedong went into the water. At that time, Comrade Dong Biwu, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice chairman of the National People's Congress, wrote the word "winter swimming Pavilion" hanging in the pavilion. In the corridor beside the pavilion, there is still a memorial poem inscribed by Comrade Dong Biwu: "grand meeting, chairman of Nanning, Yongjiang winter swimming Memorial Pavilion. The workers and peasants have made great efforts to leap forward, and the overall situation is like a strategic position. "
Many old Nanning still remember clearly that in January 1958, Chairman Mao braved the severe cold to swim in Yongjiang river. Since then, Nanning people have been keen on winter swimming.
