School history

In March 1958, the Chinese government decided to set up the second petroleum university, which is located in Nanchong City, where the headquarters of the petroleum war is located.

In 1958, under the deployment of the State Council, Tsinghua University and Beijing Institute of petroleum transferred relevant faculty and books and instruments to establish Sichuan Institute of petroleum.

In August 1958, the Ministry of petroleum industry recruited 643 undergraduate students in seven five-year undergraduate programs: petroleum drilling, petroleum exploitation, petroleum field machinery, petroleum refinery machinery, petroleum geology, petroleum refining and artificial petroleum. On September 20, 1958, Sichuan Petroleum Institute was officially established with the approval of the State Council, which is subordinate to Sichuan Provincial People's Committee.

In July 1970, the State Council approved the renaming of Sichuan Petroleum Institute as Southwest Petroleum Institute.

In 1972, it began to recruit "workers, peasants and soldiers college students".

In 1977, the college entrance examination was resumed and the recruitment of workers, peasants and soldiers was stopped. In 1986, the University obtained the right to confer doctoral degree.

In 1991, the University was approved to set up a mobile post doctoral research station.

In March 2000, the school was transferred to be jointly built by the central and local governments and mainly managed by the Sichuan Provincial People's government.

In 2002, Chengdu Campus (phase I, 850 mu) was officially put into use, and Sichuan College of political science and law management was incorporated.

In December 2005, the University officially changed its name to Southwest Petroleum University.

In 2008, PetroChina, Sinopec, CNOOC and Sichuan Provincial People's government signed an agreement to jointly build southwest petroleum university.

In 2010, the second phase project of Chengdu Campus (1200 mu) was completed; in the same year, it became a national "characteristic key discipline project" construction university.

In 2011, it was selected as the implementation University of "national construction high level university public postgraduate project".

In January 2017, the University was rated by the Ministry of education as one of the first batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform.

In September 2017, the University was selected into the list of world-class discipline construction universities.

In May 2017, Chengdu Municipal People's government signed a strategic agreement with the university to build a world-class energy University.

In December, it was selected as the national innovation and entrepreneurship base of university practice education.

In March 2018, the school was selected into the first batch of "new engineering" by the Ministry of education Research and practice project; in April, it was selected into the "hundred schools project" of China; in July, it was selected into the innovation and talent introduction base project (referred to as "111 plan"); in November, the people's Government of Sichuan Province, CNPC, Sinopec and CNOOC jointly signed the agreement to build a world-class discipline Set up the strategic cooperation framework agreement of universities (Southwest Petroleum University).

In August 2019, it was rated as a national innovation and entrepreneurship typical experience university by the Ministry of education; on December 26, it became a world-class Discipline Construction University jointly built by the Ministry of education and Sichuan Provincial People's government.

On May 12, 2020, the University Alliance of Chengdu Chongqing double city economic circle was jointly established with 20 universities including Chongqing University;

On July 2, he joined the Art Alliance of colleges and universities in Chengdu Chongqing economic circle.
