architectural style
It is a typical building reflecting the style of folk houses in southern Shanxi. The theme building of Li's courtyard is somewhat special. Compared with the buildings of that era, it seems to be a little westernized. It is known that because Li Daoxing (ziyong), the owner of the courtyard, studied in England and married a British woman, Mai Ru, the whole building presents an obvious western style, which partly reflects the artistic characteristics of the integration of Chinese and Western cultures. Here, the European "Gothic" architecture is presented Architectural style, the overall outline of the gatehouse is high, straight and sharp, the lines are light, and the shape is elegant. It is a "Gothic" building in Europe in the 16th century. The brick carving pattern on its surface is a typical folk art in southern Shanxi, showing the artistic characteristics of cultural exchange and integration between China and the West.
Good deeds of the Li family
1. The Li family has done a lot of good deeds. Since they migrated to Hancheng in Tongzhou in Hexi, they have been known as "Li Shanren" for generations. Wanquan County, the original nine years of drought, water as expensive as oil. Every time there is drought, there is water shortage in the village. In the early years of the Republic of China, in order to solve the problem of drinking water for people and livestock, the Li family took the lead in organizing the whole village to dig deep wells and solved the problem of drinking water for the whole village.
Counter-Japanese War
During the Anti Japanese War, the Japanese often bombed Xi'an. In order to protect the safety of his family and neighbors, Li Daorong built an air raid shelter near the south wall of Tianshuijing street in Xi'an city. The Li family took it as their duty to help the poor. For those in Yanjing village and Xuedian village who have difficulties in marriage and funeral, the Li family gives money and food. For the funeral of the poor, the Li family gives a coffin to let them live in peace to show their mourning for the dead. On New Year's day, the Li family always give some food money to the poor households in the village to make them pass the new year.
In 1930, the plague was prevalent. In order to save the lives of the villagers, the Li family bought back "ten point water" (anti epidemic drugs) from Yuncheng and distributed them to every household in the village.
In the autumn of 1930, Yan Xishan mobilized rich families from all over the province to finance the construction of highways. Li family brothers donated 36000 yuan, representing 36 villages in the western and southern parts of Wanquan County, with 1000 yuan each. Around 1931, the road from Yishi to Wanquan was broken and completed a year later.
In the 17th year of the Republic of China, there was a severe drought in Hedong, and countless people died. The Li brothers spared no effort to help the victims, donating 6000 silver dollars to the victims, and setting up porridge houses and meals in the family temple of Xuedian village, the ancestral temple of Yanjing village and Yuncheng temple for a year.
2. In 1894, the Gushan flood broke out in the county. Most of the houses in Yanjing village collapsed, most of the grain was submerged, and there were more than 100 people without food and clothing. Li Jingxiu and Li Jinglun, together with their nephew Li Daosheng, organized their families to collect soil and cook stoves for the villagers, chop firewood and cook rice, and give up food and clothes, so that none of the villagers suffered from hunger. In the 26th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1900), in the daytime, the sun was red and there was no light. The common people are so hungry and cold that they can't live. Li Jingxiu and Li Jinglun, together with their nephew Li Daosheng, gave dozens of grain to the villagers. At that time, Yan Xishan, chairman of the Shanxi provincial government, presented a plaque for the Li family to show his recognition.
3. Li Daosheng also attaches great importance to education. He generously donated 500 liang of silver to build a baby rearing hall in Gaocun temple. In preparation for the establishment of the county higher and primary schools, they also donated 1000 liang of silver to fund their establishment. The National School in this village is short of funds, so it once again subsidizes 30 liang of silver. In his life, Li Daosheng did not pursue fame and wealth, but devoted himself to self-cultivation. He believes that talent is the foundation of a country. Only by revitalizing education can we strengthen the country and enrich the people. The Li family built private schools to educate future generations. The Li family not only attaches importance to the education of their children, but also attaches importance to respecting teachers. Every year on the winter solstice, the master of the Li family will specially entertain the teacher. The housewife will wear a pleated skirt and bring her children to salute the teacher. The Li family taught the younger generation to read scriptures instead of dead books, and to learn and use them flexibly. The brick carving of "Sima Guang smashing the VAT" on a screen wall in the compound is a flexible form of education. On both sides of the screen wall, there is a couplet: "if you have a thousand hectares of forest, you will realize that planting virtue is like planting a tree." it means that when you have a thousand hectares of forest, you will realize that doing good is just like planting a tree. Only by accumulating good can you get good returns. When you save thousands of books and write a lot of articles, you will know that being a man is just like writing an article. You should start from small things and become a great tool.
One year, two thieves went to Li's house to steal things. As soon as they got to the roof, Li Daosheng found out and said in a loud voice, "please come down from the room! It's dangerous late at night. If you fall down and hurt yourself, who will support your parents? Wait for me to carry the ladder for you After hearing this, the thief was very ashamed. He knelt down and kowtowed. Li Daosheng gave them some money and food and told them to come to him when they were in trouble. From then on, no one came into Li's house to steal anything. Li Daosheng's five wives are all benevolent and charitable people. Every Spring Festival, they will organize their daughter-in-law to send food and wine to the long-term workers, without slighting, mean. As long as there are people in the village asking for help, they will do their best to help. After their death, the villagers of Yanjing village gave her a plaque of "Yide forever". The good deeds of the Li family made the greedy think incorruptible and the cowardly think upright.
4. There is such a couplet on the gate of the courtyard where Li Daoxing's third wife, Mai's, lives, "there are chess players in front of the three provinces. They are happy to keep friends. Once they collect books upstairs, they will teach their descendants.". Three provinces refers to Zeng Zi's "I think about myself three times a day, and I am unfaithful to others."? Do you believe in making friends? Is it hard to pass on That is, a person should reflect on himself from three aspects: is he working hard for others? Have you been honest with your friends? Did the teacher review his studies?
