Introduction to scenic spots
South Cave:
It was excavated in the Northern Wei Dynasty and completed in the Sui Dynasty (595-616 A.D.). Amitabha, the main Buddha, has a plump face, thick lips and natural and smooth clothing lines. The reconstructed statues, which are vigorous and majestic in the Northern Wei Dynasty and lively in the Tang Dynasty, belong to the style of the transitional period. The numerous inscriptions of statues in the cave provide precious written materials for researchers.
Middle hole:
Built from the first year of Jingming Dynasty to the fourth year of Zhengguang (500-523 AD), the cave is in horseshoe shape with a dome, 12 meters deep, 10.90 meters wide and 9.3 meters high. The sitting statue of Sakyamuni, two disciples and two Bodhisattvas are carved on the main wall, and two Bodhisattvas are erected on the north and south walls. Buddha and Bodhisattva, with slender body, gentle expression and elegant demeanor, are the typical representatives of "xiugu Qingxiang" popular in the late Northern Wei Dynasty. The ground is decorated with lotus patterns, indicating the lotus treasure pool. A large lotus flower in full bloom is embossed in the middle of the cave top. There are eight body Jiyue and two bodies to support the heaven, and the tassel curtain forms a lotus canopy. On the front wall are large relief images of Vimalakirti in disguise, the prince sacrificing himself to feed a tiger, the prince xudana giving alms, the empress and the emperor worshiping Buddha, and the ten gods. In 1978, in order to protect the cave carving, the brick roll door was demolished. So that the little-known four head four arm, one head four arm Dharma heaven can be seen again.
North Cave:
It was first chiseled in the Northern Wei Dynasty and completed in the early Tang Dynasty (641-650 AD). The main statue is Amitabha Buddha, and the flame pattern backlight is complex and vivid.
The main Buddha statue on the main wall of beidong cave in Binyang presents a special "scissors hand" gesture, which is actually a very rare Buddhist fingerprint. Combined with the posture of both hands, holding the chest high, the palm of the right hand up, the thumb, ring finger and little finger up, the other two fingers straight, the palm of the left hand down, bending the ring finger and little finger, straightening the other fingers, this is a kind of fingerprints that can convey a strong will. Due to the weathering of the thumb, the gap between the index finger and the middle finger is too large, which is similar to the scissors hand that we are used to putting out now, so it is called "scissors hand" Buddha by netizens.
The "dragon head" plinths on both sides of the entrance have the same modeling style as those unearthed from Sima Jinlong Tomb of Northern Wei Dynasty in Datong. It is a work of the Northern Wei Dynasty.
brief introduction
Binyang cave, including the South cave, the middle cave and the North cave, is one of the caves built by Emperor Xuanwu for his parents, Emperor Xiaowen and Empress Dowager Wenzhao. Among them, the excavation of the middle cave alone took 24 years, and its magnificent scene is the highest among the many Grottoes in Longmen. Sakyamuni, the main Buddha, sits in the center with a slender and beautiful face, a kind and kind face, and a slight smile. JIAYE, Ananda, Manjusri and Puxian stood around. The image of JIAYE is mature and dignified, and Ananda is lively and cheerful. The clothes of the Buddha statues changed from the style of exposing the right shoulder and opening the shoulder in the early Northern Wei Dynasty to the style of praising the clothes, which is the reflection of Emperor Xiaowen's Sinicization policy in the art of stone carving. On the top of the cave is carved a lotus cover, surrounded by elegant and refined music and support for heaven and man. On both sides of the inner wall of the cave, there were three layers of large relief carvings. The lower layer is the famous "emperor's Buddha worship" and "empress's Buddha worship". The composition is rigorous and the carving is exquisite. It is a masterpiece of ancient Chinese carving art.
