Agricultural trade division
Chengdu Agricultural Trade Office of the U.S. consulate is a trade assistance and Trade Promotion Office under the U.S. Department of agriculture (USDA). The USDA has established five agricultural trade offices in Chinese mainland Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Shenyang. Chengdu Agricultural Trade Office of the US consulate introduces and promotes American agricultural, forestry, animal husbandry and sideline fishery products in Southwest China, covering Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou, Yunnan and Tibet. It is in charge of official information of the US government and educational and cultural exchange activities in Southwest China. The press and Culture Department of the U.S. Consulate General in Chengdu has a Chengdu American center with a collection of more than 1000 books. It is dedicated to the study of the United States and has more than 40 kinds of American journals. During the daily office hours, the document information center is open to the public.
The department coordinates and supports American cultural and educational activities in China. These activities include the exchange visitor program, Fulbright and other educational exchange programs and lecture activities. Beijing American Center (BAC) provides reference information services on American history, society, government and education, and regularly organizes related activities and projects, including Fulbright project, Education USA China and English language project.
The press and Culture Department of the US Consulate General in Chengdu coordinates and actively recommends Chinese students and scholars to study in the United States, and also invites American students and experts to come to China. All the alumni who have participated in the American cultural and educational exchange program are all over the world. They use the network resources to establish an online alumni list to strengthen their contact and interaction. The US Consulate General in Chengdu was established in 1985. Its first office is located on the West first floor of Jinjiang hotel. The consulate started with only six U.S. officials and about 29 local employees. At that time, there were only administrative offices (a consul general and an administrative assistant), a small office dealing with political, economic and commercial affairs, a consular office, a logistics office and a press and culture office.
In 1985, every office was in the charge of an American official. Compared with that year, today's consulate has grown to a total of more than 200 employees, of which about 150 are local Chinese employees. They are the main force of our daily work, and many of them have worked in the consulate for many years.
Americans here work relatively short hours, usually two to three years. They are all professional diplomats of the US foreign affairs department. They are required to work in Chengdu. More and more US officials can speak Chinese, which also reflects the general trend of the whole world and the most important bilateral relations in the world mentioned by the US government.
