Earthquake sites in the old town of Beichuan
Beichuan, Sichuan Province, is the only Qiang Autonomous County in China, with a total population of 161000 before the earthquake, including 91000 Qiang people. The county seat is Qushan town. The sudden 5.12 Wenchuan earthquake caused a lot of damage, heavy casualties and huge economic losses in the whole county. According to the overall plan for post disaster reconstruction in Sichuan Province, the old Beichuan county is reserved as an earthquake site. It is the only earthquake site with the largest scale, the most comprehensive damage type and the most typical secondary disaster. It is divided into three parts: the old city, the new city and the Shaba earthquake fault, with a total protection area of 1.2 square kilometers. Among them, there are 12 important event protection sites, 16 first-class protection buildings, 75 second-class protection buildings, and 6 typical geological and infrastructure damage protection sites. The earthquake site of Beichuan old county is not only a base for studying the seismotectonic background and causes, but also a base for studying the characteristics of regional crustal movement, the internal movement of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau and other major scientific issues. It provides a site for field investigation, research and experiment in the fields of Geophysics, geological science, construction engineering and so on.
