There are more than 70 rooms in the Sanjin courtyard. The hall is tall and the carving is fine. There are two earth and stone walls around it. There are turrets like blockhouses at the four corners.
From the ancient city of Jianshui, 40 kilometers south, you will arrive at Huangcaoba, a Hani village on the road from Jianshui to Yuanyang. Another 18 kilometers from Huangcaoba to the west is Huixin, a Yi village.
There is a distinctive ancient building in the village, that is, the chief secretary's office of Nalou. It is both solemn and magnificent. It is really amazing: it is located in the remote mountains and forests. If you can see such a grand building, you can imagine the wealth of the owner and the advanced craftsmanship.
Cultural relics protection
Nalou Chief Secretary's office is now a state-level cultural relic protection unit. It is the Yamen of Nalou Chadian deputy chief officer's Office (Yi chieftain), which ruled the areas on both sides of the red river for generations in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
It is located on the hillside of the North Bank of the Red River, with dangerous terrain and peculiar shape. The building covers an area of 2895 square meters, with the gate, front hall, main hall and backyard as the central axis, arranged from south to north. The wing room, study and ear room are symmetrical. It is a three-way courtyard with more than 70 large and small houses. The gate is square, standing on a 3-meter high platform, with a playground and a screen wall in front. What's more strange is that there are two turrets for defense in the four corners of Nalou department, on which bullet marks can be seen so far.
