Staircase Street
Staircase street is located in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong. As the name suggests, it is a street full of stairs. Except for a small section south of Hollywood Road and next to Wenwu temple for vehicles to drive into Sifang street, the other sections are all stone steps, which are the longest steps in Sheung Wan. It was built between 1841 and 1850 in the early days of the opening of Hong Kong. It has a history of more than 160 years. Therefore, it is listed as a first-class historical building by the Hong Kong antiquities and monuments office.
brief introduction
In the past, rich people usually took sedan chairs to climb up the stairs, so they named it after it. Now, the rich people still live on this narrow staircase.
Stairway Street starts from Queen's Road Central and goes up the hill, passing through morrow street, Hollywood Road, Sifang street and Billie's street to Cain road. People in Hong Kong must feel familiar with staircase street, because many films and TV series have been shot here.
The staircase street was originally paved with granite. After more than 100 years of history, most of it has been paved with concrete and replaced with new iron railings. However, many historical traces can be clearly seen, such as old retaining walls, tree walls and roadside guardrails.
The man Wu Temple at the junction of stairway street and Hollywood Road, and the YMCA at Billies Street are all listed as statutory monuments by the government.
