Shanghai Library is a research-oriented public library, which was built in July 1952. It was originally located at No. 325, Nanjing West Road, and later moved to No. 1555, Huaihai middle road. On December 20, 1996, the new Shanghai Library was officially opened to the public, becoming a large comprehensive research-oriented public library, ranking among the top ten libraries in China.
Shanghai Library
Located in Huaihai Middle Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai Library is a comprehensive research-oriented Public Library and Industry Information Center in Shanghai. It is also the Shanghai Branch Center of the national cultural information resource sharing project and the public culture research base of the Ministry of culture. It is one of the first batch of national key ancient books protection units.
Shanghai Library was founded in 1952, and Shanghai Institute of science and technology information was founded in 1958. In 1995, Shanghai Library merged with Shanghai Institute of science and technology information, and the new library of Shanghai Library was officially opened to the public in December 1996.
By the end of 2015, Shanghai library had a building area of 127000 square meters, 36 reading rooms, 24 departments and 751 staff. The library has a collection of more than 55 million volumes (pieces) of Chinese and foreign literature, including about 1.7 million volumes of thread bound Chinese ancient books, 25000 kinds of rare books, 170000 volumes, and 2256 kinds of 13526 volumes of national first and second-class collections.
Historical evolution
On July 22, 1952, Shanghai library opened at 325 Nanjing West Road.
In 1958, Shanghai Institute of science and technology information was established as a comprehensive information research and literature service unit.
In 1958, Shanghai Library merged with Shanghai Historical Literature Library, Shanghai Science and Technology Library and Shanghai newspaper library to build a new Shanghai Library.
In October 1995, Shanghai Library and Shanghai Institute of science and technology information merged into a provincial (municipal) library and information consortium.
In December 1996, the new Shanghai Library was officially opened to the public.
On November 24, 2018, it was selected as "the third batch of Chinese 20th century architectural heritage projects".

Precious ancient books
By the end of 2015, Shanghai library had collected about 1.7 million Chinese ancient books in thread binding, 25000 rare books and 170000 volumes, belonging to 2256 national first and second-class collections and 13526 volumes. Among them, there are beixixiangji, yongmingji of Zen, bopengge of chuanzi monk, zhuanjijie of Chunqiu classic, Dingxin xiangchongjing and so on.

By the end of 2016, through technological integration and transformation, Shanghai Library has opened its digital resources on the Internet: 3000 full-text genealogies, 4 special pictures of Shanghai Nianhua, 50 rare and engraved ancient books, 100 books of the Republic of China, 10 audio of characteristic old records, more than 30 online lecture videos, and more than 20 online exhibitions.
By the end of 2016, Shanghai library had compiled and published the excellent bibliography of Weng's collection and Weng's literature. The first printing ceremony of the Song Dynasty edition of the long and short classics was held.
In September 2018, Shanghai Library and Shanghai Bookstore Publishing House jointly published the new China church newspaper (photocopied Edition). The new China church newspaper (later known as the new church newspaper, renamed as the world communique) was an influential Chinese Journal in the late Qing Dynasty, which was an important medium and text carrier for the eastward spread of Western learning in the late Qing Dynasty.
In March 2018, the large-scale series "statistics of the Republic of China in Shanghai Library" edited by Zhou Deming and Huang Guorong of Shanghai Library and planned by Huang Xiangong was published. The series contains 894 kinds of statistical data in the period of the Republic of China, with a total of more than 120000 pages, and is divided into 220 volumes (including 1 volume of the catalogue).

Academic journals
The Journal of library was jointly organized by Shanghai Library Society and Shanghai Library, and was founded in January 1982. It started as a quarterly, changed to bimonthly since 1987, and changed to monthly since 1999. Since 1997, the Annual Academic Journal of theory has been issued with 300000 words every year. Since 2003, the annual journal has been officially published in the form of book number. In 2000, it entered the "Chinese Journal matrix"; since 1992, library magazine has been listed as the "national Chinese Core Journals" for four consecutive times.
In March 1955, Shanghai municipal library published the index of national major periodicals, which was bimonthly at the beginning, changed its name to index of national major periodicals since 1956, and changed it to monthly since the second half of the same year. Since 1959, it was divided into two journals, philosophy and Social Sciences Edition and natural science and Technology Edition. It was published until September 1966, when the Cultural Revolution began to suspend. In 1973, it was officially renamed "national index of newspapers and periodicals" (monthly). In the early stage, philosophy society edition and science and Technology Edition were integrated. In 1980, it was divided into philosophy and Social Sciences Edition and natural science and Technology Edition.
The national index of newspapers and periodicals includes about 8000 kinds of periodicals from Hong Kong and Taiwan, covering all fields of philosophy, social science, natural science and engineering technology.
