Puji temple was rebuilt in 1519, the 14th year of Zhengde in Ming Dynasty. Because of the high terrain, it is commonly known as Gaomiao, Guandi Gaomiao, also known as Huatuo temple. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, it was the Mingzhu Temple of the great scholar. In the tenth year of Xianfeng (1860) of the Qing Dynasty, Prince Gong Yixin sent bashali and others, representatives of the British and French allied forces, who were held in the prison of the Ministry of punishment, to this place for imprisonment. Originally a Taoist temple, it was changed into a Buddhist temple during the period of the Republic of China.
