Historical evolution

In 1948, the CPC Jilin Provincial Committee discussed and agreed to establish a university for Nationalities in Yanbian, tentatively named "northeast Korean people's University" and submitted it to the North Bureau of the CPC Central Committee for approval.

In February 1949, the Northeast Administrative Committee approved the name of the University as "Yanji University". The Preparatory Committee submitted a report to the Northeast administrative committee, proposing to change the name of "Yanji University" to "Yanbian University". Enrollment started in March. Yanbian medical college was merged into Yanji University. On March 20, the opening ceremony was held at Stalin theater. April 1 is the school day. In April, the Northeast Administrative Committee approved to change the name of "Yanji University" to "Yanbian University".

At the beginning of its establishment, the school had literature department, medical department and agricultural college. Later, after the adjustment of departments, the original department and agricultural college were developed into normal college, medical college and agricultural college.

In July 1954, the central Ministry of Higher Education decided that Yanbian University was a subordinate School of the central Ministry of higher education.

In April 1957, Yanbian art school began its preparatory work. On October 5, Yanbian art school held a ceremony at the Party School of the State Party committee.

In December 1957, with the approval of the central Ministry of health, yanbian hospital was the Affiliated Hospital of Yanbian University.

In August 1958, in order to better meet the needs of national economic and social development, medical college, agricultural college and engineering college were separated from Yanbian University and became independent Yanbian University, Yanbian Medical College, Yanbian Agricultural College and Yanbian Institute of technology.

In March 1959, the provincial Party committee approved Yanbian Institute of technology to be merged into Yanbian University.

In October 1961, Guo Moruo wrote the name of Yanbian medical college.

On July 12, 1964, Comrade Zhu De, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and Comrade Dong Biwu, vice president of the people's Republic of China, visited the University and inscribed the name of "Yanbian University" in his own handwriting.

In June 1966, the Party committee established the leading group of Cultural Revolution in Yanbian University. In July, the "Cultural Revolution" team of Yanbian Prefecture Party committee entered Yanbian University and Yanbian Agricultural College. In August, under the influence of the "Red Guards" movement sweeping across the country, mass organizations were set up in Yanbian University, Yanbian Medical College and Yanbian Agricultural College, and a large number of students went to Beijing.

In December 1969, Jilin provincial Revolutionary Committee decided to abolish Yanbian Agricultural College. After several changes, the name of the school was Yanbian Agricultural College. According to the instruction of "resuming classes and making revolution" in the cultural revolution of the Central Committee, classes were officially resumed. Yanbian University, Yanbian Medical College and Yanbian Agricultural College held a general meeting and announced the list of the first batch of cadres and teachers who were transferred to Yanbian University and Yanbian Agricultural College.

From 1970 to 1971, Yanbian art school was closed.

In January 1972, the Standing Committee of the State Party committee discussed and decided to merge the former Yanbian Medical College and Yanbian people's Hospital for prevention and treatment into Yanbian medical college. The State Party committee decided to restore Yanbian art school.

In January 1973, with the approval of the Ministry of foreign affairs, Yanbian University resumed the exchange of books and periodicals with the Central National Library of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Kim Il Sung University, Academy of Sciences and Academy of social sciences. In August, the State Party committee decided to separate Yanbian Medical College from yanbian hospital.

In 1976, the Jilin provincial Party committee agreed to change Yanbian Medical College into Yanbian medical college.

In November 1980, the Ministry of Education issued a notice to list Yanbian art school as one of the key secondary vocational schools in China.

In November 1981, Yanbian University was listed as one of the first units to confer master's degree.

In January 1983, Yanbian teachers college was established.

In August 1986, Yanbian University awarded its doctoral degree in Korean language and literature.

In February 1987, Yanbian University enrolled the first batch of doctoral candidates and on-the-job doctoral candidates.

In June 1988, with the approval of the National Education Commission, Yanbian art school was upgraded to Yanbian branch of Jilin art college.

In 1995, it was listed as a key comprehensive university in Jilin Province.

In 1996, with the approval of the former State Education Commission, Yanbian University, Yanbian Medical College, Yanbian Agricultural College, Yanbian Teachers College and Yanbian branch of Jilin art college were formally merged into the new Yanbian University. In October of the same year, Yanbian University of science and Technology (Preparatory), the first Chinese foreign cooperative school running institution established since the reform and opening up, was merged into the new Yanbian University. The university has passed the "211 Project (100 key schools in the 21st century)" department pre examination and project approval, and has been identified as the national "211 Project" key construction university.

In 2001, the school was identified as the key construction college of western development by the Ministry of education.

In 2005, it was identified as a comprehensive University jointly supported by the people's Government of Jilin Province and the Ministry of education.

On May 13, 2011, the largest campus expansion project in the development history of the University was announced to be completed, realizing the goal of centralized education.

In May 2013, it was selected into the first batch of Pilot Universities for the reform of training mode of clinical medicine master degree.

On January 5, 2017, Yanbian University signed a contract with Hunchun Municipal People's government to build the Hunchun campus of Yanbian University, with an overall planning area of 1 million square meters.

In September 2017, it was selected as the national "world-class discipline construction university".
