historical background
After the victory of the 1911 Revolution, Mr. Chen Duxiu, Secretary General of the governor's office of Anhui Province, and Gao Junman have been living in the western style building in the South Gate of Anqing. The property right belongs to Mr. Chen Duxiu himself, and his son Chen Henian (Chen Zhemin) was born on the second floor of the building.
Chen Duxiu came to Jiangjin, Chongqing in 1938. On May 27, 1939, at the invitation of Yang's descendants, he came to Yang's courtyard (Shiqiang courtyard) from the nearby Shi family to help sort out Yang Lucheng's works. He lived in the former Yang's second wife's bedroom. Chen Duxiu lived here until his death on May 27, 1942. He was 63 years old.
In this courtyard, Chen Duxiu wrote "primary school literacy textbook", a masterpiece of philology in modern history, with a scientific method to reclassify Chinese characters ("primary school" refers to philology, similar to "Shuowen Jiezi").
In this courtyard, Chen Duxiu "acts with a clear conscience and is always frank. He is in a difficult situation like a rainbow". He has written many political commentaries: "outline of the general situation of the world after the War II", "future of the oppressed nation" and "my fundamental opinions" In this courtyard, he deeply reflected on the international communist movement and the socialist system of the Soviet Union, and finally formed the "final opinion" with democracy as the core!
Brief introduction of old residence
There are three empty West Chamber rooms in the stone wall courtyard. There are two wooden beds, a desk, a small wooden cabinet, and several rattan boxes for books and manuscripts. They are all restored according to the memories of relatives, friends and neighbors, and the utensils are simple and crude. At present, 31 relics have been preserved, including brown box, leather case, wardrobe, inkstone, copper teapot, leather bag, clothes, etc.
In October 2000, Chen Duxiu's former residence was named as one of the first batch of Chongqing municipal cultural relics protection units by Chongqing Municipal People's government.
On December 27, 2012, the exhibition hall of Chen Duxiu's former residence was reopened after the third renovation.
The stone wall courtyard is the only surviving original residence of Chen Duxiu.
The third renovation took Duxiu's life as the theme, built the environmental landscape, renovated the cultural relic buildings, rearranged the existing buildings in the old house, and expanded the 3.8 km road of Chen Duxiu's old house. This renovation not only pays attention to the diversity and vividness of forms, but also ensures the authenticity and richness of contents. The exhibition collected a large number of precious historical relics and historical materials from Russia, Taiwan, Anhui, Shanghai and other places. Through the restoration of scenes, sculpture, painting, sound, light, electricity and other means of expression, the exhibition is divided into seven parts to vividly and artistically show Chen Duxiu's main life experiences and achievements, especially the detailed introduction of Chen Duxiu's last years in Jiangjin. Let people get close to Chen Duxiu, get to know him, and understand the magnificent history through him.

At the west end of Zhide North Lane on beiheyan street, there is a South Lane of qihelou, which is not far south. There is a narrow corridor in the east of the road. This is the remnant of the reconstructed Jiangan Hutong. Now there is only one family left in the Hutong, which is Chen Duxiu's former residence on the 20th.
The old jumenlou is not big. It is a typical Manzi gate. The wooden gate has been mottled for a long time. Fortunately, the pier and hairpin are still intact. Through the crack of the locked gate, you can see the messy courtyard. Chen Duxiu lived here in 1917 when he was invited by Cai Yuanpei to be the head of liberal arts at Peking University. Later, his magazine New Youth moved here from Shanghai. Nearly a century ago, it was a place where Hu Shi, Qian Xuantong, Liu Bannong, Shen Yinmo, Zhou Zuoren and others often visited. In 1920, Chen Duxiu gave up Peking University's high salary of 300 silver yuan per month and set out from here to establish a party organization in Shanghai.
Almost torn down
Jiangan Hutong used to be connected with a street in the East. There were 60 or 70 households living in it. Later, they were demolished to build buildings. To the East is the Ministry of civil affairs, and to the north is the Supreme People's Procuratorate. Chen Duxiu's old house had to be demolished, but it was not approved by the Municipal Bureau of cultural relics that it was preserved.
