Today's Chongming County began in the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1583). Due to the limited technical level of embankment construction in ancient times, the land in the southern part of the island was constantly collapsed due to tidal erosion. Since 1277 (yuan to yuan), Chongming County has undergone five migrations and six constructions. In the 11th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty, the county seat in pingyangsha collapsed. He maoguan, the then magistrate, led the people to Changsha to build the new county seat. The brick city was built in 1586, surrounded by a river and a mud city. There are five gates. The East, South, West, North and southeast are named Leping gate, Yingxun gate, Qingcheng gate, Gongchen gate and Chaoyang Gate respectively. The city wall is built with Ming Dynasty green bricks. In 1675 (the 14th year of Kangxi reign of Qing Dynasty), the gates were built and renamed Chunhui gate, Chongan gate, Zhenhai gate, Wuding gate and Baisheng gate. Since 1954, the city walls have been demolished one after another and changed into roads around the city, namely Nanmen Road, Dongmen Road, Ximen road and Beimen road. Bayi Road runs through the north and south of the city, and Renmin Road runs across the East and west of the city.
Chongming new town is one of the nine new towns determined by Shanghai's urban master plan. After completion, it will become the new political, economic and cultural center of Chongming County. Chongming new town is divided into three districts. At present, the old district of the county town will be regarded as the West District of the new town and become a part of the new County town; the New District in the city is the center of the city; the New District in the east of the city is the reserve area for future development.
