Qimei Island
Qimei Island, the most remote outlying island in Penghu Islands, is a fascinating place for tourists. This is not only because of the moving deeds of "seven beauties" on the island at that time, which makes people nostalgic; the strong and beautiful natural landscape on the island is enough to make tourists forget to return. After touring Qimei Island, visitors are all amazed, praising the island surrounded by rock pillars and towering in the vast expanse of blue waves as a "paradise".
Qimei island was developed between Ming and Qing Dynasties. At that time, people from Xiamen and Quanzhou in Fujian came to Penghu one after another and lived scattered in Magong and Huxi. Later, some of them moved to Qimei, where they made a living by farming and fishing and settled on the island. Because the island is located at the southernmost end of Penghu Islands, it was originally known as "Nantian island". It is also called "Lantau" because it is the largest island among the outlying islands. In 1949, the then Penghu County Magistrate visited the island and found that there was a famous historic site "seven beauties" on the island. In recognition of the seven women's heroic deeds in resisting Japanese pirates, "Lantau" was renamed "seven beauties island".
There are more than 800 families on Qimei Island, about 5000 people. Most of the residents mainly fish and take agriculture into account. Fengru grass and haifurong are their specialties. The local people are simple, and the living standard of the islanders is comparable to that of Taiwan.
The most prosperous area of Qimei island is the south port area at the southwest end, and the north port is the main port for ships and yachts between Magong. From Beigang to the East, a 5-meter-wide asphalt road leads to the famous historic site "seven beauties". It is said that during the Ming Dynasty, when Japanese pirates invaded the island, seven young women, unwilling to be humiliated, threw themselves into the well and died with their chastity. After the villagers buried the well, seven fragrant trees grew up on the side of the well overnight. The villagers recognized him as the soul of the seven virgins, and he has been a treasure to this day. Later generations felt his chastity and strength, and set up the "seven beauties" monument as a memorial. Besides, there are also pavilions, "seven beauties song" steles, etc. The seven beauties song says: "seven beauties are beautiful, holding their virginity and refusing to die. Then, their souls will be sent to the lonely village forever, and the spring on the well will be full of branches."
From the "seven beauties" to the East, you can see the snow-white seven beauties lighthouse standing on the undulating green grassland line. Next to the lighthouse is a spectacular basalt cliff. Looking to the west of the lighthouse, several dark rocks stand upright on the intermittent yellow sand beach. Its silhouette is like a pregnant woman lying on her back, which is the so-called "Stone Man" scenic spot. The "Stone Man" is said to be an infatuated young woman sitting on the beach waiting for her husband, who fell down because of lack of strength, so it is also known as "Wangfu stone". The scenery here is beautiful, and people often fish there. In the south of Nanhu port, there are also "Dawan" Bay surrounded by three basalt cliffs, and six story Zhenfeng tower and other ancient buildings, which are all tourist areas.
From Qimei lighthouse to the north along the east coast, there is a crescent shaped Bay. On the left side, there are magnificent columnar basalts piled up like building blocks. In the harbor, there are white and broken coral beaches, where visitors can fish sea urchins, dig shells, dive and catch lobsters. Among the big reefs at the northern end of the Bay, you can see many colorful tropical fish swimming among them. It's really picturesque and fascinating.
From the top of the cliff in Zhonghe village, you can also overlook the sea erosion platform under the cliff. The green, gray and brown stripes are curved and continuous. On it, it looks like a Wolong with its head in the West and its tail in the East. The local people call it "Longcheng". A small promontory of Xuanwu cliff in the southwest of Youcheng, protruding out of the sea, looks like a "stone lion". The local people call it "lion constellation". The gap between the promontory and the promontory is pounded by the sea waves, and the echo is deep. Further north, there are majestic "top gap" scenery known as "moon world", which are good places for tourists.
Qimei Island Scenic Spot
Located in Qimei Township, Penghu County, and about 500 meters southeast of Nanhu port, qimeiren tomb is a relic of famous chastity stories. It has become a famous tourist attraction of Qimei in Penghu and the origin of Qimei's place name. There are two stone tablets in the tomb of seven beauties that we can see today. The one on the left is the monument of seven beauties erected by the Japanese, and the one on the right is the monument of seven beauties song, which tells the origin and historical origin of the tomb of seven beauties. In order to make the souls of the seven beauties have a place to live, the villagers of Qimei built seven cabins nearby and put seven cosmetics in front of the graves to worship.
The origin of history
It is said that during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, Japanese pirates made trouble and looted everywhere. During an attack on Lantau Island, seven beautiful young girls hid in a cave. Later, they were found by the Japanese pirates and chased to a well. Unwilling to be humiliated, the seven girls threw themselves into the well one after another to die. Later, the neighbors dug earth to cover the well and buried it. Soon, there were seven catalpa trees growing on the grave, with small white flowers and fragrance. The villagers thought it was the soul of the seven privet girls, so they set up a monument to commemorate it and engraved "seven beauties tomb". Today, there are both tombs and trees. Although the trees are not tall, they have a history of more than 400 years. With luxuriant branches and leaves, thick green and intertwined branches, they have become one of the scenic spots in Penghu.
Its fragrance is incomparable and quite fragrant. The villagers set up a monument to commemorate it. The inscription is roughly as follows: "during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, Japanese pirates invaded Penghu and plundered Lantau Island. Seven beautiful women were not humiliated by the pirates and threw themselves into the well. The villagers buried them in the well. There were seven fragrant trees growing on the grave. They did not wither all the year round, which changed Lantau Island into Qimei island. In commemoration of the festival, the stele also records the song of seven beauties: "seven beauties are white on the wall, holding their virginity, refusing thieves, dying. Then, the soul will be sent to the lonely tree forever, and the well will be full of branches.". It tells the historical origin of the tomb of seven beauties. To commemorate this story, the people of the world renamed the island originally named Lantau as seven beauties, so that the people will remember the name forever.
