At the beginning, there were two temples in Riyuetan water area, one was Yihua hall in Riyue village, the other was dragon and Phoenix Palace in shuishe village. The gods of the two temples protect the territory and the people, and are worshipped by the residents. Not only the Han people, but also the indigenous people of the Shao nationality, who lived here, prayed to the gods for their blessing after the plague. As a result, the epidemic situation subsided and they began to offer sacrifices to the gods. During the period of Japanese occupation, it was planned to build the largest hydropower plant in Asia. .
Wenwu temple is located on the northern hillside of Riyuetan. Its origin is related to the construction history of Riyuetan. In 1932, after Riyuetan built a dam to store water, there were two temples, Longfeng palace and yiyuhuatang in Beiji lane. In view of the high water level, it was decided to move the temple. With the help of local people, the two temples were integrated in 1934, which was the predecessor of Wenwu temple in 1969 The reconstruction of the temple is in the form of "Northern Dynasty style", which is the Huihong architectural pattern seen in today's Wenwu temple.
Construction history
In 1934, the water level of the Sun Moon Lake rose more than 20 meters, and the cultivated land beside the lake became water area, so the residents were forced to move, and so were the "yihuatang" and "longfenggong". In order to prevent the gods from being served separately, it was decided to build a new temple to worship the gods of the two temples through consultation between the managers of the two temples and local people. Therefore, Chen Jinlong, then head of Yuchi village, was elected as the chairman, Huang Huolu as the vice chairman, Huang Foyuan, Huang Chaolai, Huang azhu, Lai Jianghe as the Standing Committee, and 36 local people were elected as the members to actively prepare for the establishment. The Preparatory Committee applied to rent the Baoan forest land in the north mountain of Sun Moon Lake as the temple site. The construction was started in November 1934 and completed in 1938. The base area is 0.5435 hectares and the building area is 80 Ping. Confucius, Wenchang emperor, Guansheng emperor and other gods are worshipped, so they are collectively referred to as "Wenwu Temple". "Wenwu Temple" was established in 1958. In order to meet the actual needs and in accordance with government regulations, a management committee was set up, with Hong Zhenliang as the first chairman. The regulations and management rules shall be formulated as the basis for the treatment and promotion of temple affairs. In 1964, the guest house was built. In 1965, the guest house was completed. The lakeside wharf and the ladder to the sky were also completed. The water and land transportation is convenient, and the number of pilgrims is increasing. In 1967, in view of the great increase in the number of pilgrims, the narrow courtyard and hinterland of the temple, and the old temple, the management committee urgently needed reconstruction. So in 1968, the management committee was reorganized into a consortium legal person system, and a board of directors was set up, which was named "Wenwu temple in Riyuetan, Taiwan Province". The board of directors is responsible for the management of the temple and promoting the reconstruction. The reconstruction project started in August 1969. Lin Yanggang, then head of Nantou County, was invited to break the ground and officially start construction. Due to the large scale of the project and the great need of manpower and funds, local enthusiasts were invited to participate in the event and received a warm response. Sun Hai, a great son of wood industry, supports bulldozers in land preparation. The government has high expectations for the reconstruction of the temple, and multi-party support is also a great help. Due to fine painting, good division of labor and cooperation, the project went smoothly. In 1971, most of the main building was completed, and in January 1972, the town seat incense ceremony was held. The project was completed in 1976. The base covers an area of 10224 hectares, with a building area of 1061 square meters and a total project cost of over 21.5 million yuan. The precious wood and stone materials used and the exquisite carving technology are unparalleled in terms of the current temple architecture. The temple is magnificent, the pattern is broad, and the Wenwu temple is a new one. During the period of reconstruction, the attention and support of the highest government is the main reason for the project to be completed as soon as possible. At the beginning of the construction, President Jiang Gong personally visited the temple base and inquired about the project situation. He explained that the temple should be large in spirit, and the temple should be wide. He built the "front, middle and back three Hall" palace architecture of Northern Dynasty in China. The Wu hall is dedicated to Guan Sheng emperor and Yue Wu Mu king, while the Wen hall is dedicated to Confucius. In 1987, in order to serve the increasing number of believers and tourists, the board of directors and supervisors proposed to transform the original simple guest house into a hotel. In the early morning of September 21, 1999, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in Yuchi area, which caused landslides, cracks in the temple of Wenwu temple, collapse of the front hall, collapse of the bell tower, and structural damage of the middle and back hall. The attached Jingsheng building is half collapsed. This is the "9.21" earthquake in Taiwan. In the face of this great change, although people are worried. However, the board of directors of the temple was not surprised and decided to actively rebuild it. The executors worked hard to plan and raise funds. In addition to applying for loans from banks, the renovation funds were also subsidized by the National Scenic Management Office of Sun Moon Lake, Nantou County Government, and the Taiwan Power Development Foundation, as well as the tourist believers and Youmiao temple. Finally, the renovation was completed in 2003, and a "stone tablet for carrying heavy burden" was set up in Miaocheng. Thanks for the help from all walks of life.
Construction situation
During the renovation period, there are many problems, such as: the integration of new and old building materials, the maintenance of the original appearance, the strengthening of earthquake resistance, the continuation of the original work The deacons overcame it one by one and tried to be perfect. After the renovation, the ruins disappeared, the grand atmosphere revived, and the number of believers and tourists doubled, symbolizing the long-term development of the temple. Looking back to its origin and evolution, Wenwu temple is composed of two small temples, which were simple and narrow at the beginning, and rebuilt to be grand and grand. The damage caused by the earthquake is enough to enlighten the new weather and pattern. Although the appearance is different, the spirit is consistent all the time. This is the spirit that "culture can secure the country, and martial arts can stabilize the country", which is admired by believers and loved by the people. Therefore, it can be loyal to the sun and the moon, righteousness through heaven and earth, and Lingshan Shengshui for thousands of years. The situation of Wenwu temple is steep. It is built according to the mountain. The higher it is, the more majestic it is. Facing the road around the lake, the main entrance is a dark green marble archway. On the front, the inscription is "Wenwu Temple". On the left and right, the inscription is "Chongwen" and "Chongwu". On both sides of the beams and columns, there is a couplet written by Mr. Huang Jie, a picture of "Tao runs through the past and the present, de can be created" and "huizhao, sun, moon, righteousness and sky". Step up, for the temple square, a pair of jujube red giant lions holding the ball echo, particularly eye-catching. The orientation of the temple is "sitting east to west" with the mountain on its back and the lake on its face. It has a great momentum of embracing the rivers and mountains. The main building is "one city, two courtyards and three halls"; most famous temples in Taiwan adopt this layout, which is a very high-level Temple layout. When you enter the temple, you will be attracted by the spectacular front hall. The front hall is a pavilion type building, which is mainly used for sacrifice, so it is called "worship hall"; the pavilion is called "Shuiyun Palace", which is dedicated to the founding gods of Wenwu temple. The main hall is dedicated to Guan Yu, the martial saint, so it is called "martial Saint hall". The main hall is located in the middle of the whole temple. It is the largest building in the Wenwu Temple group, with a height of 21 meters. It is a square hall. This layout is to show the majesty of the emperor. The back hall is mainly dedicated to Confucius, and it is called "Dacheng hall". Therefore, it is built according to the ancient Confucian system, which is different from the former two halls in many ways. Its characteristic is that the roof adopts a very rare double eaves veranda style, which is the highest level of palace style architecture to represent Confucius' holiness and nobility.
