Tian Xingshu, Zhongshan, was born in 1836 in Fenghuang, an ancient city. He joined the Qing army at the age of 16, and was promoted to sentry officer and Huwei battalion officer in less than two years. Xianfeng six years (1856) was promoted to general, given the name of Shangyong Batu color. At the age of 24, because of his outstanding military achievements, he was promoted from the chief of Anyi town to the governor of Guizhou Province, and was awarded the imperial envoy. The next year, he also served as governor of Guizhou, and mastered the military and political power of Guizhou.
On the Dragon Boat Festival in 1861, people clashed with four monks and were unjustifiably abused and expelled by foreigners. Tian's men arrested four monks. The French Embassy intimidated Tian Xingshu by violating the Treaty of Tianjin. Tian ordered four monks to be decapitated and created a "Qingyan religious case" that shocked the Qing court. On January 15, 1862, the people of Kaizhou held dragon worship activities, and the Catholic missionary wennaier intervened. In a rage, Tian Xingshu ordered wennaier to be put in public and hung his head on the city gate. It is called "Kaizhou teaching plan" in history. The French minister sent a note to the Qing government demanding that Tian Xingshu be executed. The Qing government was frightened by the foreign power, so it had to dismiss Tian Xingshu, investigate and deal with him, and distribute him to Xinjiang. On his way to exile, Tian Xingshu was deeply appreciated by Zuo Zongtang, governor of Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. He played the court to release Tian Xingshu. As a result, Tian was able to return to his hometown Fenghuang. "People win and lose the inconstant situation, poor and humble, my family has a plain style.". Tian Xingshu, who was persecuted by the court for the sake of national justice, died at the age of 41.
