In China, starting from Urumqi in Xinjiang in the west, passing through Gansu, Ningxia, and Xi'an in Shaanxi in the East, there are strong wavy airflow and thermal updraft suitable for long-distance flight, which can complete the 2000 km straight-line flight award set up by the international gliding science and technology organization. Hexi Corridor is located in the golden section of the best route of 2000 km, and its thermal updraft is the most in Jiayuguan. Jiayuguan is characterized by high latitude, less total cloud cover, long sunshine duration, strong solar radiation, large daily temperature difference, up to 23.4 ℃, easy to produce thermal updraft; less rainfall, low humidity, dry climate, moderate cumulus cloud amount, strong thermal updraft, with an average rising rate of 3-5 m / S, sometimes up to 6-8 M / s. The thermal updraft forms early and disappears late, lasting for more than 10 hours. The visibility of the base is usually 30-50 km, and the ground speed can be increased by 30-40 km / h. The height of air flow is generally over 4, 00O meters, sometimes over 6000 meters, which is conducive to high altitude flight. At the same time, the flat and open Gobi desert can be used for safe landing in case of no updraft.

Jiayuguan gliding base covers an area of more than 60000 square meters. There are 8 sports airplanes, including 65 for junior high school and 53 for junior high school. There are 10 gliders, including 7 for home-made Qianjin, 2 for imported yangtar and 28 for two seats in Romania. In addition, there are 1 bee airplane, 2 for hot air balloon, and hillside gliding, hillside parasol, high altitude flight oxygen equipment, etc.

Before 2000, the management and use right of Jiayuguan gliding base belonged to Gansu Sports Committee. In 2001, Gansu Sports Committee transferred it to Jiayuguan City. After research and demonstration, Jiayuguan municipal government decided to further develop the gliding base, adding new sports tourism projects such as general aviation, gliding, skydiving, bungee jumping, hot-air balloon, hillside umbrella, power umbrella, kart, tennis and shooting, and carrying out a variety of gliding tourism activities, so as to make it a world-class country integrating tourism, competition and exchange International gliding base.

The National Aviation gliding festival was held from July 22 to 24, 2011

The event is sponsored by the aviation radio model sports management center of the State General Administration of sports, Gansu Provincial People's government and China Aviation Sports Association, and undertaken by Gansu Provincial Sports Bureau and Jiayuguan Municipal People's government.

The gliding Festival is divided into four events: hot air balloon flight, power suspension, delta wing parachute jump and power parachute. There are three performances: air show, night hot air balloon fire cruise and night hot air balloon tethered exhibition. More than 70 aircraft will participate in the gliding Festival.

It is understood that Jiayuguan City held the "China Jiayuguan international gliding Festival" in 1991 and 1992 for two consecutive years, which had a good response at home and abroad and was designated as one of the key promotion festivals by the National Tourism Administration. Jiayuguan gliding base is one of the three famous gliding bases in the world, which is as famous as Australia gliding base and South Africa gliding base. In the 1980s, many international and domestic gliding competitions were held here, creating many gliding competition records.
