Yau Ma Tei police station was completed in 1893. It was originally located at the junction of Shanghai street and Chung Fong Street. At that time, Shanghai street was also called "ChaGuan Street"; in 1922, it moved to the junction of Gascoigne Road, Canton Road and Chung Fong Street. In the past, because it was close to the typhoon shelter and cargo unloading dock, it was once the place where the wind bulb was hung. In 1998, the government intended to demolish the police station for the construction of the Central Kowloon trunk line. Due to the great social repercussions, the government decided to modify the plan. The old wing will be retained, but the new wing with lower historical value may still need to be demolished.
Yau Ma Tei police station is an Edwardian building with gorgeous design to highlight the authority of the police force. The police station building is three stories high, and the left and right wings form a hook shaped building. The second and third floors of the old wing of the police station were originally equipped with open cloisters supported by boulders, but now they are closed for rooms. The police station has teak floors, western style decorations on the walls, and a top room with a hook shaped middle point. The bottom of the building is more than ten feet high. It is believed to be the banquet hall and dormitory for the most senior police officers. The entrance of the police station facing Zhongfang street and Guangdong Road is zigzag due to geomantic omen. The old wings have been changed, such as some of the golden roofs have been changed to flat roofs.
