Historical evolution
About 5000 years ago, villages were established in Chishan, Tuohu and other places. After entering the bronze age, in today's lianzitang area, villages have become more concentrated.
Before the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, Yuanjiang was under the jurisdiction of Jingzhou, one of the nine prefectures in Shu Yu Gong. During the spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period, Yuanjiang became one of the important birthplaces of Hunan and Chu culture. During the Warring States period, it belonged to Qianzhong County of Chu state. Qin belongs to Changsha County. The Western Han Dynasty belongs to Yiyang County. In the Southern Dynasty, Emperor Liangwu (AD 522) set Yaoshan County as the beginning of Yuanjiang City. In Sui Dynasty, it was changed to Anle County, which was renamed Yuanjiang County because Yuanjiang river flowed into Dongting Lake, and Qiaojiang County in Song Dynasty. Song Qiande first year (963), renamed Yuanjiang County.
Since the 29th year of the Republic of China (1940), Yuanjiang County belongs to the fifth administrative supervision district.

In August of that year, after the establishment of the new Hunan provisional government (the provincial people's government was formally established in April 1950), the province set up one city under the jurisdiction of the province and 10 special districts. The special district has a commissioner's office, which is an agency dispatched by the provincial government. Yuanjiang County belongs to Yiyang district.
