Yancheng site, located in the west of Wujin District government and the north of Yanzheng West Road, Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, is the most complete preserved spring and autumn ground city site in China.
Yancheng site, with its unique shape and precious cultural relics, was listed as a national key cultural relics protection unit by the State Council in 1988. Yancheng is 850 meters long from east to west and 750 meters long from north to south. It is made of three cities and three rivers. The city wall is divided into three parts, all of which are built by heaping soil, about 3 meters high. Zicheng (King City) is located in the north of the central part of the city, with a perimeter of 500 meters, nearly square; the inner city (inner city) is nearly square, with a perimeter of 1500 meters; the outer city is irregular, with a perimeter of 2500 meters.
Historical origin
Yancheng site in Changzhou is located in Wujin, the southern suburb of Changzhou, about 15 minutes by car. Yancheng is surrounded by three rivers. From the inside to the outside, Zicheng, Zicheng River, inner city, inner city river, outer city, outer city river, three cities and three rivers. This kind of architectural form is unique in the ancient city ruins of our country. Most of the ancient city pools are one city and one river, and a few are two cities and one river or two cities and two rivers.
The Yancheng site is 850 meters long from east to west and 750 meters wide from north to south, which coincides with the record of "city of three li, outline of seven Li" in Mencius. This proves that Yancheng is an ancient city built more than 2500 years ago. Yancheng was built in the late spring and Autumn period with a history of more than 2500 years.
In 1935, Chinese archaeologists carried out the first field survey of Yancheng, and confirmed that Yancheng was a relic of ancient residents' activities, which attracted the attention of academic circles. In the 1950s and 1960s, three canoes and a batch of bronzes and pottery were unearthed in the inland river of Yancheng. The excavation of these groups of cultural relics showed the unique cultural features and connotation of the Yancheng site for the first time, causing a sensation in society and academia.
Since then, the research on Yancheng has been continuous. In 1986, the archaeological excavation team of Yancheng site in Jiangsu Province conducted a six-year archaeological excavation for the first time and solved some outstanding problems. As one of the members of the archaeological excavation team at that time, Lu Jianfang, an associate researcher of the Nanjing Museum, believes after years of research that "Yancheng is a military castle of the state of Wu. It is the only well preserved military facility in the spring and Autumn Period in the world with three rivers and three walls."
Yancheng historic site
Yancheng historic site, three walls meandering ups and downs, three moats year-round waves, smooth water. Water protects the city, the city depends on water, luxuriant forests and bamboos, green pines and beautiful trees. Most of the plants, trees and rocks are not decorated, so they are quiet and wild. There are more than 70 mounds in and around the city, most of which are tombs of the spring and Autumn period. Standing on the Bank of the lotus pool of Zicheng River, the lotus has withered and the branches and leaves are still there. A gust of autumn wind blows through, and the lotus leaves are swaying, which makes it very lonely. It's a kind of empty mountain with no dust and no vulgarity. Some people say that "Beijing in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Hangzhou in the Southern Song Dynasty, Xi'an in the Sui and Tang Dynasties, and Yancheng in the spring and Autumn Period" are reasonable.
Why do people live in Yancheng? There is no final conclusion on this issue in archaeology. According to the records of yuejueshu · biography of Wu in the Eastern Han Dynasty and Taiping Huanyu Ji in the Northern Song Dynasty, Changwu area was called Yanling in the spring and Autumn period, and it was the food town of Jizha, the fourth son of King mengshou in the late spring and Autumn period. Jizha, dissatisfied with Helu's assassination of Wang Liao and his usurpation of the throne, vowed not to enter Wu for life, so he dug a river to build a city in his fiefdom Yanling. In today's words, he built an "independent kingdom" named "Yancheng" to show his intention of drowning until death. Some people speculate that there was once a state of Yancheng and Yancheng was the capital, but this theory lacks sufficient basis.
Unfortunately, Changzhou, such a valuable historic site, is basically hidden in the boudoir, and Shanghai tourists know little about it. It is reported that Changzhou has taken this rare ancient ground city as a key tourist attraction. It is planned and designed according to the requirements of world cultural heritage protection. It will cost 660 million yuan to build a Yancheng Heritage Park including 1000 mu heritage protection area, 3000 mu Forest Park and 250 Mu entrance area. This year, the new entrance East Square, including shopping pedestrian street and imitation Chunqiu building street, will be completed and opened. By the end of next year, the whole Yancheng park will take shape.
Nearly 2000 precious cultural relics have been unearthed from the Yancheng site. Some of these cultural relics are beautiful in shape, simple and elegant in style; some are decorated with gorgeous patterns and exquisite in craftsmanship; some are unique in shape and rare, so they can be called "national treasures".
