The China Research Center for giant panda conservation was established in 1983 in cooperation with Wolong Nature Reserve and the World Wildlife Fund. Hu Jinchu, an expert on giant panda research, was the first director of the center. In 2008, the Wolong base of the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center was badly damaged by the Wenchuan earthquake, and was rebuilt with the help of Hong Kong
.
The main task of scientific research of the center is to carry out applied basic research around the breeding of giant pandas, increase the number of giant pandas, and comprehensively carry out basic and applied research in the fields of behavior, ecology, breeding, reproduction, breeding, physiology and biochemistry, endocrine, genetics, disease prevention and control, human rejuvenation and population monitoring of giant pandas and precious economic animals and plants. Wolong, Dujiangyan and Ya'an Bifengxia will become the largest giant panda scientific research and nature conservation education base in China, and improve the level of giant panda protection and scientific research in China. The current director of the center is researcher Zhang Hemin.
Historical evolution
In 1980, the Chinese government and the World Wide Fund for nature reached an agreement to establish a "China Research Center for giant panda protection" in Wolong National Nature Reserve. In 1983, the research center was officially completed and put into use.
After the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, under the leadership of the State Forestry Administration and the Forestry Department of Sichuan Province, with the support of the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and all sectors of the society, the research center focused on the future development needs of giant panda scientific research and protection, and made a new positioning, planning and construction. At present, the three bases of Wolong, Dujiangyan and Ya'an under the jurisdiction of the research center have all been reconstructed or transformed and put into use.
The previously existing "China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center" belongs to the same team as Wolong National Nature Reserve Administration and Wolong Special Administrative Region government, and the entrusted department is provincial forestry department. The newly established China bear conservation and research center is directly under the State Forestry Administration, and its headquarters is still located in Wolong National Nature Reserve.
On December 28, 2015, China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center was officially established in Wolong Giant Panda Base in Sichuan Province. The first director was Chen Fengxue, deputy director of the State Forestry Administration.
The newly established research center will not only be limited to Sichuan Province, but also integrate domestic giant panda research resources, and set up or increase giant panda research institutions and protection bases in Sichuan, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong.
On January 15, 2019, Sichuan Academy of giant panda science and giant panda Academy were established.
Organization Profile
China Giant Panda Protection and research center is composed of Wolong, Dujiangyan and Ya'an Bifengxia bases. It will become the largest and world-class giant panda research and nature protection education base in China, and improve the level of China's giant panda protection and research. Zhang Hemin, director of Wolong Nature Reserve Administration, is also director of China Giant Panda Protection and research center.
Achievements
Through decades of research on giant pandas, experts on giant pandas have, on the basis of drawing on the experience of predecessors and constantly summing up the causes of past failures, finally overcome the three major difficulties of "breeding", "pregnancy" and "cub survival" in the field of Giant Panda Breeding in the past two years. In the process of solving the "breeding difficulty", mainly through the research of "breeding male giant panda" and other topics, only century giant panda research center of China National Bureau of conservation and forestry in Wolong has cultivated four breeding males with natural mating ability in recent years.
The ultimate goal of China Giant Panda Protection and research center is to release all captive giant pandas to the wild, expand the wild population, and increase the genetic diversity of giant pandas, so that this endangered species can continue to survive. Up to 2002, 33 nature reserves have been established in China. There are 5 giant panda reserves in Shaanxi, 27 in Sichuan and 1 in Gansu.

In view of the problem of "difficulty in conception", in addition to more in-depth research on sperm collection, freezing, refrigeration and capacitation of giant pandas, China Research Center for giant panda protection has also adopted exogenous gonadotropin and other treatment methods for infertile female giant pandas of reproductive age after years of hard exploration, and finally achieved success in 2000, making two giant pandas who had good mating in previous years but had not given birth After the birth of the baby, the century problem of "baby survival" was carved. On the basis of the previous research, young experts from China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center have conducted in-depth and detailed research on "breeding environment, immunity, artificial milk, feeding technology" and other aspects. In 1998, 4 babies were born and 5 babies survived; in 1999, 4 babies and 8 babies were born, 1 triplet and 2 twins were born. Except for the triplet born and 1 baby died due to its own underdevelopment, all the other 7 babies survived; 2000 was a year of historical miracle. There are more estrous female giant pandas in captivity than in previous years, with 11 in total. In 2000, the giant panda gave birth to 8 fetuses and 12 cubs, 11 of which survived (one died at birth), 4 twins and 4 singletons, which set two world records in the history of giant panda artificial breeding: the number of births and the number of surviving cubs in one year. The pregnancy rate was 72.7%, and the survival rate was 91.6%. In recent years, the survival rate was 100%. From 1991 to 2004, the research center bred a total of 47 fetuses of 60 and 57 survived.
In 2002, it was newly built with the support of the State Forestry Administration, which reduced the population pressure. In the study, giant pandas in Bifeng gorge of China Giant Panda Protection and research center respectively borrow exhibitions from Washington National Zoo, San Diego Zoo, Prince Kobe zoo, Chiang Mai Zoo, and meiquan palace zoo in Vienna, Austria, earning tens of millions of US dollars every year. All these funds are used for China's wildlife protection and for China's wildlife protection It has made a positive contribution to the development of property protection.
On October 7, 2019, the number of captive giant pandas in China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center exceeded 310.
Panda Base
Shenshuping base in Wolong
On May 11, 2016, the "China Giant Panda Garden" of shenshuping base in Wolong of China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center was opened, with a total construction area of 19844.51 square meters. The base is divided into three functional areas: giant panda breeding, wild training and public education of wild animals. In the May 12 Wenchuan earthquake, the giant panda enclosure, scientific research facilities and equipment of China Giant Panda Protection and research center were seriously damaged. In order to better protect the giant panda, with the help of the Hong Kong SAR government, the relevant departments of Sichuan Province selected Dujiangyan as the site to build a protection institution integrating giant panda care, rescue and disease prevention and control. Some aged or injured pandas in other places in Sichuan will be sent here for recuperation and treatment.
Ya'an Bifengxia Panda Base
Bifengxia scenic spot is located 16 kilometers north of Ya'an City, with an area of 20 square kilometers and a forest area of more than 20000 mu. There are two canyons in the scenic area. The left one is 7km long and the right one is 2.5km long. It is in the shape of "V", 30-70m wide, 700-1971 m above sea level and 100-200m above sea level. Vegetation, gorge scenery and waterfalls are the distinctive features of Bifengxia scenic area. Gorge lush forests, verdant, peaks overlapping, ravines towering. Sometimes the peaks are towering, the sky is high, and sometimes the two mountains merge into the skylight. The multi types of waterfalls add infinite scenery to Shuangxia gorge, which makes people intoxicated. In view of the excellent natural ecological environment of Bifeng gorge, China Giant Panda Protection and research center set up the base in Bifeng Gorge Scenic Area, which was completed and officially opened to the public on December 28, 2003, covering an area of more than 1000 mu. After the May 12 earthquake, some giant pandas in Wolong moved to Bifeng gorge. At present, the base has more than 80 giant pandas in captivity, which has become the place with the largest number of giant pandas in captivity in the world, attracting many international friends to visit ya.
Base reconstruction
During the Wenchuan earthquake, Wolong base of China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center was severely damaged, and 32 giant panda pens were seriously destroyed. During the post earthquake reconstruction, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) has undertaken the task of supporting the construction of Wolong Nature Reserve. It involves 23 reconstruction projects, covering many aspects such as base enclosure restoration, ecological restoration, social welfare, culture and education, power and energy
. In June of that year, the research center began to transfer more than 60 giant pandas, of which 32 were transferred to Beijing, Fuzhou, Chengdu and other relevant units for foster care, and the rest were transferred to Bifengxia base for emergency resettlement.
