Quartel dos Mouros
The Port Authority building (formerly known as the garrison or the moor barracks; commonly known as the Navy factory) is located in the Macao Special Administrative Region, on the edge of MAGE mountain. It is now the office building of government departments. The building is 67.5 meters long and 37 meters wide. It is a masonry building influenced by Arabic color and Gothic architectural features.
In 2005, the Port Authority building was listed in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list as one of the historical buildings of "Macao historical city".
Development history
In 1874, the Port Authority building was completed
As a police camp in Macao and India. In 1905, it was changed to the office of Macao port authority and marine police inspection team, so it was commonly known as the Navy factory. As the Port Authority building is located on the hillside near the entrance of the inner port of mage, a typhoon signal station is set on the roof of the building to let fishermen, ships and residents know the typhoon signal. With the development of the port authority, the building of the port authority is not enough to meet the needs of the Macao port authority. The office of the Macao port authority has been moved to the harbor building in Lam Mau Tong, and the important role of the Port Authority building has gradually faded out.
Architectural features
The Port Authority building was designed by cassuto, an Italian. The Port Authority building is a two-story building with Muslim style domes and floral fences. It has the style of arabic architecture.
The building is located at the edge of MAGE mountain, on a ramp of MAGE street. It is a masonry building influenced by Arabic color and Gothic architectural characteristics.
The building is 67.5 meters long and 37 meters wide. It is built on a platform surrounded by granite. Except that the central part of the building is a two-story building with a height of 6.6 meters, other parts are designed as one-story buildings.
In addition to the side near mage mountain, there are four meters wide corridors with pointed arches around the three sides of the building, which are not only convenient for viewing the scenery, but also a reflection of the local climate.
At the intersection of the cloisters, the height of the top of the building is also slightly increased, breaking the strong sense of level of the building. On the external walls which are perpendicular to each other, there are three Islamic pointed arches which are more than 1 meter wide and supported by four small columns. On the other walls of the cloisters, they are all 1.5 meters wide There are 19 sharp arches with Arabic color in the window openings of the Islamic pointed arches, especially on the long cloister. The three leaf ornaments between the sharp arches and the square pointed ornaments arranged in rhythmic battlements form a strong sense of rhythm. The whole building is painted yellow and set off by white pattern, which forms a strong contrast with the rough granite wall in color and texture.
